Dear Sir, Dear Madam,
Investment abroad can bring many benefits for companies: a higher awareness level, international training on the job
for employees, and new business openings.
Exhibition companies - including venues - are changing hands. It will be very interesting to see how globalisation
internationalisation strategies are implemented - they do, after all, call for lots of inter-cultural finesse.
Adnec: Significant investments in Europe and Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (Adnec), which operates one of the
world's most modern exhibition and convention centres in the United Arab
Emirates, has acquired control of Excel London, the UK capital's leading exhibition
and conference venue, through a UK subsidiary. The acquisition, valued at more
than € 400 million, is part of Adnec's strategy of developing a global network of
venues to serve the international exhibitions industry. Excel London will act as a
cornerstone for the development of a blue-chip brand utilizing the existing
expertise and reputation of both Excel and Adnec. The proposed plans for the
UAE's capital's Al Ain Convention Centre, a new € 615 million development
projected by Adnec, were also released. The new centre covers an area of
275,000 m² with a total of 220,000 m² available to investors. It will feature three
main oasis public plazas surrounded by a community of ten clusters, a cultural
centre and conference centre (5,000 m² total conference space and a 2,250 m²
grand hall that can be divided into 4 subsections). A 16,500 m² 4-star hotel with
225 rooms will be linked to the conference centre. (se) www.adnec.ae
consideration of US$ 12.1 m. At home in Novosibirsk, Siberian Fair owns a
comprehensive portfolio of 30 exhibitions servicing business requirements in the
Novosibirsk region. The largest exhibitions are in construction, furniture & interiors,
motor, food products & packaging and agriculture. In 2007 the business, which
has around 160 employees, generated revenue of approximately US$ 10 m and
profit before tax of approximately US$ 3.5 m. The business will be managed by
ITE's Moscow office, with operational continuity provided by 42 year-old Sergey
Vladimirovich Tsoy, the chief executive of Siberian Fair since 2003, who will
remain with the firm. The acquisition further strengthens ITE's core activities in the
growing markets of Russia and the CIS and is complementary to the sector profile
of the Group's exhibition portfolio. (se) www.ite-exhibitions.com
Ho Chi Minh's new SECC exerts a pull
The premier industrial exhibition in Vietnam has a new home. EPM Vietnam
makes its eleventh appearance at the new Saigon Exhibition & Convention Center
(SECC) in Ho Chi Minh City, combining for the second time three trade fairs under
one roof. Between October 30 and November 2, 2008 EPM Energy Electricity &
Environmental Protection, EPM Machine Tool Saigon and H20 Vietnam
(organised by Planetfair, Hamburg, Germany) will draw visitors to Vietnam from
Asia and many other countries throughout the world. The show is now also being
staged annually. For 2008 well over 200 exhibitors are expected, displaying their
programmes on a total area covering more than 8,500 m². In close cooperation
with co-organisers Chan Chao International, Taipei, Taiwan, Hannover Messe
International has brought the three tradeshows together. The SECC will ultimately
comprise four indoor exhibition halls totalling 40,000 m², additional outdoor
exhibition space of between 15,000 and 20,000 m², a 2,000-seat convention
centre, a high-rise office tower, and two international standard hotels. Occupying
117,886 m², it is owned by the Saigontourist Holding Company (60 %) and the
Phu My Hung Corporation (40%). (se) www.secc.com.vn and www.epmmachinetool-saigon.com
Ifema prepares expansion
The structural works for the Ifema-Valdebebas connecting tunnel have been
concluded, which means that future expansions at Feria de Madrid can be
planned. The tunnel will link the current fairground at Feria de Madrid with the
roughly 500,000 m² plot that Ifema has set aside in Valdebebas. Ifema will be able
to expand on 250,000 m², using this area to cater for its future growth needs.
Construction costs will entail investment by Ifema amounting to € 3 million. The
tunnel, which is 144.90 m long and features a minimum free height of 5 m and free
width of 25 m, is expected be ready in August 2008. Inside the tunnel there will be
two pedestrian pavements, each 3 m wide, a four-lane road and a platform for light
transport. (se) www.ifema.es
Düsseldorf doing well
An economic tailwind and strong international business drove up group revenues
for Messe Düsseldorf in 2007 by almost 14 % to roughly € 354 m - a nice 60th
anniversary performance in a year that does not feature among the company's top
sellers. The bulk of the growth in turnover stemmed from Düsseldorf-based Messe
Düsseldorf, which slated revenues of almost € 259 m, up from the previous year's
€ 212 m. 38 % of group revenues (40 % in the previous year) were generated
abroad, the majority in the Czech Republic, Russia and China. Group profit after
tax climbed to more than € 33 m, following a negative result of € 7.4 m in 2006.
And what is in store for 2008? The exhibition company's CEO provided the answer
personally: "Success!" After all, Euroshop, Interpack and Drupa all take place this
year. (ch) www.messe-duesseldorf.de
Messe Düsseldorf: Two Chinese spin-offs a year
Messe Düsseldorf will continue to invest in China, so Joachim Erwin, chairman of
the exhibition company's supervisory board, announced early in May at the results
press conference. "Given sustained market momentum, in the coming years we
plan to place an average of two new events a year on the Chinese exhibition
market. We have plenty of irons in the fire, a number of further spin-offs from fairs
in Düsseldorf are currently being discussed," Erwin said, although he did not
elaborate any further. In 2007 Messe Düsseldorf China (MDC), set up in 1999,
organised six exhibitions, this year nine shows are on the agenda. The company
produced profits running well into the hundreds of thousands, but most of this is
being ploughed back into further development of the product range, Erwin
announced. (ch) www.messe-duesseldorf.de
