Lobby to prevent demolition of Earls Court
The Association of Event Organisers (AEO) is urging a re-think following the
release of the latest plans that will see the Earls Court Exhibition Centre
demolished. Capital and Counties plan to bulldoze the complex and turn this and
the 26 acres around the site into an extensive residential area. Earls Court is at
the heart of London's West End and attracts more than 2.5 million visitors, 30,000
exhibiting companies and hundreds of events per year. Austen Hawkins, AEO
Chief Executive, comments: “At a time when many other capital cities around the
world are heavily investing in their exhibition space as they recognise the
enormous economic value exhibitions and events bring to their cities and country,
it is extremely worrying that the current plans will see London fall behind the rest
of the world in this area. At peak times exhibition space within Central and West
London has reached capacity; it goes without saying that the loss of Earls Court
will hugely reduce already stretched capacity and this will have a negative impact
on the UK exhibition and events industry.” AEO is therefore lobbying the national
and local Government, the London Mayor, relevant planning authorities and
Capital and County to take immediate action to prevent Earls Court being
demolished, or at the very least to ensure that the new development includes a
“new” Earls Court exhibition centre. (ja) www.aeo.org.uk
Reed Exhibitions enters Saudi market
Reed Exhibitions has entered into a strategic partnership with Sunaidi Expo, a
subsidiary of Alfadl Group of companies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).
The new alliance is Reed's first entry into the Saudi market, which will contribute to
the company's expansion in the region with the launch of a number of international
events in Jeddah starting from 2012. The exhibition industry in Saudi Arabia in
general, and in the city of Jeddah in particular, has lately witnessed remarkable
growth, taking advantage of the big increase in business in the Kingdom. The
president of Reed Exhibitions Middle East, Frederic Theux, stressed the
attractiveness of the Saudi market and said: "We hope this partnership will
contribute to the growth of the exhibition industry in KSA. This alliance will form an
important addition to our operations in Abu Dhabi and Dubai." Jeddah is
considered the KSA's trade centre. The city is predicted to witness a boom in
exhibitions and conferences, especially now that the Saudi government shows a
notable keenness to promote development in this city and to reinforce its
economic role. This is clearly reflected in the numerous important projects
underway in the city, including the King Abdul Aziz airport and the Jeddah Islamic
Port. (ja) www.reedexpo.co.uk
MCH Group takes over HK International Art Fair
On July 1, 2011, MCH Swiss Exhibition (Basel), a company belonging to the MCH
Group, is acquiring 60% of the shares in Asian Art Fairs Limited in Hong Kong,
which organises the Hong Kong International Art Fair. The MCH Group has the
option of acquiring the remaining 40% of the shares in 2014. The parties have
agreed not to disclose the purchase price for the share packages. Held in the
Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on an annual basis since 2008, the
Hong Kong International Art Fair has, within a short time, developed into a key
international art fair for eminent gallery owners and collectors. Its success reflects
the increasing importance of the Asian art market and the fact that Hong Kong is
now the world’s third most important art market. In 2012, the Hong Kong
International Art Fair will be held under its existing name once again, but will be
brought forward from May to February 2 to 5 so that its timing fits in better with Art
Basel and Art Basel Miami Beach. The medium-term aim is to develop the Hong
Kong International Art Fair under the Art Basel brand and make it into the third
platform for this group of internationally leading art shows. (ja) www.mchgroup.com
Fiera Milano in line with business plan
In the first quarter of 2011, Fiera Milano achieved revenues of €74.6 million, a
22% drop compared to the first quarter of 2010. Enrico Pazzali, CEO of Fiera
Milano SpA, stated this week: "The decline in revenues is largely attributable to
differences in the exhibition calendar that have been known for some time. The
reduction in Gross Operating Profit [€15.5m compared to €18.8m in the first three
months of 2010] reflects the revenue trend and was also incorporated in the
forecasts. Given the expected trends it is important to note other developments in
the quarter, significant both because they contribute positively to the quarterly
results and because they are integral to the course of action being taken to
relaunch the Group contained in the 2011–2014 business plan. This is confirmed
by rigid cost control, with a 19% reduction in operating expenses, which helped
temper the decline in GOP; the strategy of repositioning leading exhibitions, which
led to an increase of €4m in the profitability of Macef Primavera 2011; and the net
increase in the contribution of foreign activities (specifically activities in China
during the period). While the international economy is emerging with difficulty from
the crisis and several indicators show that the exhibition industry has halted the
decline and entered a phase of stabilisation in the opening months of the year, if
not actual growth (as in the case of Mido), Fiera Milano proceeds confidently along
the path set by the development plan and confirms, in the absence of currently
unforeseeable circumstances, its forecast for Gross Operating Profit of €27m in
2011.” (ja) www.fieramilano.it
New show for the vending sector
Between November 21 and 23, 2011, IFEMA will stage the first edition of
Vendibérica, a new monographic fair aimed at the vending sector. This new event
seeks to provide a meeting-point for professionals from the vending machine
sector, as well as a forum where they can establish contacts and present the latest
developments in the field, thus helping to boost a market that generates turnover
in Spain of more than €2,000 million a year. Vendibérica, which will take place in
Hall 3 at Feria de Madrid, is timed to coincide with the staging of Horeq, the Hotel
and Restaurant Equipment Show, given that the complementary nature of the two
sectors favours a sense of synergy among the leading players within these
industries. (ja) www.ifema.es
Demand for architecture fair in Sweden to be accommodated
This autumn the first architecture fair will be held at the Swedish Exhibition &
Congress Centre. “Industry members need a platform where they can come
together to discuss architecture and city planning. However, no such suitable
meeting place has existed to date. Compare that with the construction industry,
which in Sweden alone has three trade fairs,” Anders Breitholz comments. He is
currently working with Mark Isitt of New Market Media and the Swedish Exhibition
& Congress Centre to plan the very first industry-specific architecture fair, which
will include both a congress and a trade fair. The first architecture fair will be for
industry representatives only, but for the future organisers hope to increase the
number of days and open the fair to the general public. “There is a great deal of
interest in an architecture fair from both the industry and the public, and we truly
believe in Gothenburg as a host city. There is a lot happening in the city in terms
of architectonics. Moreover, Gothenburg is strategically located, between Oslo and
Copenhagen.” The architecture fair will premiere October 24 and 25, 2011. (ja)
