Dear Sir, Dear Madam,
America is trailing behind, but there too exhibition statistics are soon set to look brighter. Following a period of
cancellations, more new fairs are now being launched in many countries of the world, frequently in emulation of an
event already running successfully elsewhere. This bolsters the brand and more readily finds the support of
associations, exhibitors and visitors.
American exhibition industry is still underperforming
The Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR), Dallas, Texas, announced
that data collected for the annual CEIR Index report for the second quarter of 2010
marked the ninth consecutive quarter of underperforming the previous year. The
US exhibition industry experienced overall contraction of 1.4 % in comparison to
the same quarter of the previous year. Parallel lagging indicators of recovery in net
square footage and revenue are still showing a downturn; however, the decline is
at a much slower rate. Net square feet of exhibit space sold showed a
deterioration of 3.0 %, with exhibitor numbers falling 3.0 %. However, when
compared to the same period in 2009 both metrics are showing improvement (net
square feet declined 10.1 % and exhibitors declined 12.8 %). Also, revenue
dropped by 4.4 %, compared to a 16.9 % fall in 2009 second quarter results. It is
anticipated that slow growth will continue through 2010, but the results suggest
that if the US economy is able to avoid a double dip recession the fourth quarter of
2010 and first quarter of 2011 could mark the beginning of a true recovery for the
exhibition industry. (ja) www.ceir.org
Good to Know
Effective August 1, 2010, McCormick
Place, Chicago, implemented several
changes related to recently passed
legislation aimed at lowering prices
and improving service for exhibitors
and show management. These
changes dramatically lower prices for

as compared to $ 54.2 m), and the company expects higher growth in the second
half compared to the same periods a year ago. Exhibitions revenue in the second
quarter was $ 27.4 m against $ 24.0 m. Performance is being driven by the
positive market reaction to the increasingly integrated offering of online,
exhibitions and magazines, and by the continued rapid expansion of its trade show
business, where it now has over 60 trade shows scheduled for 2011, up from 30 in
2009. The latest news is that Global Sources has scheduled the simultaneous
launch of five China Sourcing Fairs 2011 in Miami. The shows will enable
exporters from China and elsewhere to meet face-to-face with American,
Canadian and Latin American buyers. The China Sourcing Fairs are scheduled for
July 11 to 13, 2011 at the Miami Beach Convention Centre. (ja)
Cost-cutting measures taking shape
In August 2010 Messe München launched a multi-year programme entitled
“Speed” (Strategic Programme for Economic Efficiency & Development) to boost
the company’s economic efficiency, given that its shareholders want it to be selfsufficient
as from 2014. Officials in Munich are currently working on a more
efficient, innovative corporate structure to plug the financial gap left by the
cutbacks in shareholder subsidies. Originally the exhibition company was to have
received € 180 million over the next three years, but this sum has now been
slashed to € 50 m. As part of this strategic process it has been decided to merge
business division 5 (ICM, M,O,C, guest events) with division 4 (capital and
consumer goods shows with the trade fairs Bau, Drinktec and Free) and place
Monika Dech at their helm. Dech previously headed up division 4. Martin Lechner,
the previous head of division 5, will take charge of division 3 (New Technologies
with the fairs Electronica, Productronica, Analytica and Laser). (ch) www.messemuenchen.de
