Dear Sir, Dear Madam,
The current business year is calling for considerable staying power on the part for all. Particularly as the outlook for
2010 remains uncertain. What is clear, though, is that customers are seeking out quality product brands. Good,
strong brands develop confidence, loyalty and product positioning opportunities. In today's uneasy markets,
exhibitions need to "brand" themselves as well.
Over 100 brands at the first edition of The Brandery
A total of 110 brands are participating in the new contemporary urban fashion
trade show, The Brandery, which will be held at Fira Barcelona's Montjuïc
exhibition site. The mid-term aim of the trade show, which is supported by the city
and the fashion industry, is to become a European benchmark in urban fashion.
The brands exhibiting their designs from July 7 to 9 in Palace 7 of the Montjuïc
exhibition site include market leaders such as Pepe Jeans, Lacoste, New Balance
and Reebok. 45 % of exhibitors come from abroad. During the presentation for the
trade show, Fira Barcelona's general manager Agustín Cordón indicated that "a
bold commitment was made a few months ago to prevent Barcelona and Fira
Barcelona from losing their prominent position in the competitive world of fashion".
He further insisted: "The results show what a good decision it was and that the
efforts of all involved have successfully allowed Barcelona to retain its position on
the international fashion calendar." (ank) www.thebrandery.com
Interest in Bahrain's new flagship Expo City facility gains momentum
Bahrain is taking a huge step forward in providing extra exhibit and meeting
space. This is needed to establish its regional and global reputation as a business
tourism destination, with the formation of a company from the public/private
sectors that will own and manage the future development of the new Expo City
(Expo@bahrain) in Sakhir City. To be executed in two phases, the project will
increase the size of the existing Bahrain International Exhibition and Convention
Centre (BIECC) roughly tenfold, entailing investment estimated at US$ 815 million.
"In addition to protecting existing business and the reputation of BECA, the
meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) activities at Expo City
(Expo@bahrain) will generate incremental revenues of US$ 305 million annually
for the national economy and create a large number of new, full-time job
opportunities," His Excellency Dr. Hassan A. Fakhro, Minister of Industry &
Commerce and Chairman of the Board of BECA, said at the Authority's Second
Quarter Board of Director's meeting. Expo City (Expo@bahrain) will be executed
in two stages by 2012 and 2014 respectively: Phase One will comprise a 100,000
m² purpose-built exhibition facility, of which 75,000 m² will be allocated for subdivisible
exhibition space with an integrated 25,000 m² convention centre; this will
be complemented by a 50,000 m² sub-divisible exhibition and convention centre to
be developed in Phase Two. (ank) www.bahrainexhibitions.com
Klaus Dittrich (54) is to be the new
CEO of Messe München. Following a
vote by the shareholders' meeting, he
will take over from Manfred
Wutzlhofer as the exhibition
company's chief executive. Wutzlhofer
is leaving the company as planned on
December 31, 2009. Dittrich has been
a member of Messe München's
management board from April 2002 to
February 2003 as deputy managing
director, and subsequently in the
position of managing director. Before
joining Messe München, Dittrich was
deputy chairman of the DGB
Federation of German Trade Unions in
Bavaria. The shareholders also
reshuffled the entire management
effective January 1, 2010: Norbert H.
Bargmann (56), managing director of
Messe München since 2001, will
become deputy chief executive.
Eugen Egetenmeir (61), previously
deputy managing director, will become
managing director. The new deputy
managing director will be Gerhard
Gerritzen (53), currently general
manager. Reinhard Pfeiffer (46) was
already appointed managing director
in 2008. Manfred Wutzlhofer, who
turns 65 in August, is stepping down
at the end of the year after more than
25 years in the company's service. He
was a member of its management
board for more than 17 years, 14 of
which he spent in the capacity of
CEO. But retirement would be the
wrong word. On 30 October 2009,
Manfred Wutzlhofer takes over as the
new UFI president.
Global Sources named David Gillan
(45) as Chief Financial Officer,
following CFO Eddie Heng, who
retired after almost 16 years of
service. Heng will remain on the board
as a director. Prior to joining Global
Sources in October 2008, Gillan was
based in Shanghai as China
Managing Director and CEO for the
Dennis Family Corporation, a private
Australian real estate investment and

End of a partnership
The partnership didn't last long. Owing to a lack of consensus on objectives,
collaboration between Mesago Messe Frankfurt GmbH and Messe Nürnberg
China on Automation Shanghai - IAC, TME + SENSOR is being terminated. After
just one year of shared commitment the two sides could not agree on the show's
future overall direction. As a consequence PCIM China 2010 will not be
collocated, as in 2009, with Automation Shanghai - IAC, TME + SENSOR.
Shanghai will, however, continue to host PCIM China. The date for the show will
be announced in due course. (ank) www.iacexpo.com/
GL events signed a memorandum of understanding to acquire "Alice
événements", a leader in the French market in its sector. Founded in 1979 by
Pierre Lusinchi, with offices in Paris and Marseille and a permanent staff of 38,
Alice événements is a specialised provider for major accounts of event
organisation services for companies and the general public and business tourism
events. Its business is sustained largely by a solid reputation of professionalism
and a successful track record meeting the needs of a portfolio of customers that
include IBM, Total, McDonalds, La Poste, SNCF, Bayer CropScience, Séphora
and SFR. The agency also organises trade fairs devoted to real estate and twowheeled
vehicles as well as automobile rally-raids in Tunisia and Morocco. To
pursue its development, Alice événements' management, headed by Pierre
Lusinchi and Stéphane Clair, have chosen to join the GL events Group with which
they have worked closely and developed a relationship of confidence over several
years. This acquisition will provide GL events an opportunity to further reinforce its
position in the event organisation segment in France, where it is already present
through Market Place and Package Organisation. These companies offer an
exceptional complementary mix in terms of know-how, geographical networks and
commercial coverage. (ank) www.gl-events.com
IFEMA launches new Outlet Residential project
Between September 11 and 13 next, IFEMA will stage the maiden edition of Outlet
Residential, a new fair created to cater for the needs of property companies with
accumulated housing stocks. The show will also seek to boost trade activity within
the sector as a whole. With this in mind, IFEMA has designed an exhibition model
that will extend throughout the year, based on the staging of three editions in
February, May and September 2010. The fair, which will be managed by IFEMA in
collaboration with Antlet in order to attract participating companies, seeks to offer
estate agents, savings banks and financial bodies the opportunity to find an outlet
for their housing stocks within the context of the current economic climate. In this
respect, the fair will be designed around a simple participation format consisting of
a key commercial forum that features direct sale of the products on show. The
event aims to attract all members of the public interested in gaining access to the
most attractive opportunities available today on the property market. (ank)
