Check out the Colorado website at: www.colorado4h.org Outstanding Leaders/Youth Recognition The State 4-H Officer team will be presenting two prestigious awards at State Conference. The Raleigh Brooks Outstanding Leader Award and the Mile High Outstanding 4-H Youth Leader Awards will be given. Nomination forms are due to the State 4-H office by June 1. Please take the time to honor those hard working volunteer 4-H adult and youth leaders in your county by nominating them for these two awards. Nomination forms are available at your local Extension office or on the state 4-H website. Creative Cooks, Cake Decorating, Demonstrations and Performing Arts Contests May 31 will be a busy night in Las Animas as we host Fun Festival, Creative Cooks, Demonstrations and Cake Decorating Contests for the seven counties in District VI. Contests will be at the Las Animas/Bent County Community Center at 5:30. Competition and awards will be within counties; this is not a district competition. Entry forms for the contests are available at your county Extension office. Note the May 25 deadline. Contest will be cancelled if there are not enough entries to justify staff and judges time. Resource Book Library Each SE Area Extension Office has a library of the new Livestock Resource Handbooks. Members, parents and leaders can check-out a resource handbook for a specified time to learn about their project, and/or decide if they would like to purchase a handbook of their own. While these new handbooks are excellent resources with up-to-date information, they are also more expensive than other 4-H manuals. Thanks to the Fox Family Foundation, Bent Prowers Cattle and Horse Growers and Peoples Credit Union for helping fund the libraries. Resource handbooks included in the library are Beef, Goat, Sheep, Swine, Horse, Dog, Poultry and Rabbits. 2012 Memorial Day Horse Clinic and Show The Prowers County Horse Committee would like to invite all enrolled 4-H Horse Project members to the annual Memorial Day Clinic May 26-28 in Lamar. The clinic will include certified instructors, health workshops, food and more. Registration is $40 for the first family member and $30 for each additional member. Indoor and outdoor stalls are available on a first come, first served basis, send your registration in now to guarantee a spot, indoor stalls are $30 and outdoor are $15, shavings will be sold for $8 a bag. Please send your registration to the Prowers County Extension office by May 23. Contact your local Extension Office for more details and sign-up information. The camp will be at the Angel of Shavano Group Campground west of Poncha Springs, Colorado. There will be educational programs on wildlife, wildlife habitat, fishing, tackle crafting, aquatic environment and entomology. The camp will provide plenty of fishing, fly tying, wildlife viewing, insect catching and learning with a little camping and a lot of fun thrown in. Interested members and leaders do not have to be enrolled in the projects to attend. Shooting Sports Family Camp The 25 th Annual 4-H Shooting Sports Family Campout will be held June 15-17, 2012, near Victor, Colorado. More information and registration forms can be found at: http://www.co4hshooting.org/family _campout.html Camp Rocky Camp Rocky is a week long, residential camp for youth aged 14- 19 who enjoy the outdoors and are interested in natural resources. Camp Rocky staff help participants learn about their environment, while working in teams and meeting other youth from across Colorado. Campers choose one of the following resource fields for their area of focus: Forest Management, Rangeland Science, Soil and Water Conservation, Fish and Wildlife Management, and Recreation Management. Camp Rocky will be held July 8-14, 2012, near Divide, Colorado. The cost is $300, all inclusive. Full and partial scholarships are available through local conservation districts. Baca County 4-H Fowl Field Day Baca County is hosting a Fowl Field day and invites all Colorado 4-H Fowl Project members to attend. Event will be June 1, 2012, from 9:00 a.m. – noon, at the Baca County Fairgrounds. Event is free; however, please call the Baca County Extension office at 719-523- 6971 to let them know if you plan to attend. Shows, Clinics and Contests Several shows, clinics and contests are scheduled throughout eastern Colorado. Stop by or contact your County Extension Office for information on a variety of opportunities. 2012 Inbound IFYEs to Colorado – HOST FAMILIES NEEDED The IFYE program was developed in 1948 as a post-war peace effort involving 4-H farm youth from around the world; Colorado joined the program in 1951. Currently, IFYE participants come from countries on every continent. Colorado’s IFYE program is the strongest in the United States. Inbound IFYEs from Austria, Finland, Germany, Greece, Switzerland, and Taiwan will attend National IFYE Orientation in Wichita, Kansas, prior to arriving in Colorado. They will also attend State 4-H Conference at CSU June 19-21. (With the exception of Christine who arrives July 9) IFYEs generally stay with a host family for two-three weeks. The goal is for these exchange participants to learn about everyday life in the United States by participating in the homestay experience. All delegates have medical insurance and personal spending money. Please contact Courtney Loflin at the State 4-H Office for more information regarding these IFYEs. National 4-H Conference is the premier 4-H leadership development event, helping youth fulfill the 4-H pledge of “larger service…and better living for my club, my community, my country and my world”. Participants are challenged to create positive social change in their communities. Colorado 4-H Foundation provides 1/3 of the cost of the trip; check with your county to see if they will provide sponsorship. Applications are available at county Extension offices. Quilt Show Firehouse Quilts of Colorado is sponsoring their 7th Annual Quilt Show on July 20 & 21, 2012, at the Douglas County Events Center in Castle Rock, CO. We are encouraging young quilters to enter their quilts to be judged in the “Youth” and “Kids” Categories. First place prize in these two categories is a new sewing machine. The quilt doesn’t need to be finished by the entry deadline. Entry fee is $15.00 prior to May 17, 2012. After that date the fee becomes $18.00 until the deadline of June 12, 2012.
