Otero & Crowley County Shooting Sports Contest The Otero & Crowley County Shoot to qualify for State Fair will be Friday, July 13 and Saturday, July 14. Contest will start at 5:00 p.m. on Friday with muzzle loading and .22 events. Saturday events will start at 8:00 a.m. and will include all shot gun events, air rifle and archery. Interested in the Dog Project!! The dog project can be one of the most rewarding 4-H projects, you get to work with “man’s best friend.” Your dog learns obedience and you learn life skills like teamwork, leadership, and decision making, as well as how to train your dog. Brandie Jackson will be working with 4-H members signed up for the dog project. Practices/Dog Meetings will be held on Sundays from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. Practices will be held at a variety of locations to get the dogs used to different surroundings. Location for next session will be announced at each session. Please see the dates below for practices. For more information please contact Brandie Jackson at 719-251-9746. May 6, 20, 27 June 3, 10, 24 July 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 Gymkhanas Gymkhanas began in April and will continue through August. The gymkhanas will be alternating between Otero and Crowley Counties. So please pay close attention to the date and the location of each gymkhana. Helmets will be required for all participants doing barrels, poles, or flags. It is only the “speed” events that will require helmets. This does not affect the horse show at the fair. You do not have to be enrolled in the 4-H horse project in order to participate, but you must be currently enrolled in 4-H. Also, participants must pay the $2.00 horse insurance fee. For more information please call the Otero County Extension Office at 254-7608 or the Crowley County Extension Office at 267-5243. In case of inclement weather please call the extension office to find out the status of that evenings gymkhana. The gymkhanas will begin at 6:30 p.m., and the dates and locations are as follows: Monday, May 21, 2012 – Crowley County Fairgrounds – Arena Monday, June 25, 2012 – Arkansas Valley Fairgrounds – Arena Monday, July 23, 2012 – Crowley County Fairgrounds – Arena – Crowley County Days Monday, August 6, 2012 – Arkansas Valley Fairgrounds – Arena – Fair Market Goat, Sheep and Swine Tag Dates for 2012 Two dates have been scheduled to tag and weigh market goats, sheep and swine. The first date is Wednesday, May 9, 2012, from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Arkansas Valley Fairgrounds. The second date is Thursday, May 10, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. at the Fairgrounds in Ordway. Otero and Crowley County 4-Hers may have their animals tagged and weighed at either of the locations. Mark your calendars now and plan accordingly. 4-H teaches perseverance. Kim Juul COOL Forms You must have a signed COOL form for each market animal whether you purchase or raise your market animal. As you are purchasing your animals please take along the form and have the seller sign it then. Affidavit of Ownership/Country of Original Label Declaration Forms are available on the website http://www.extension.colostate.ed u/SEA/4- H/Livestock/12%20COOL%20De clartation.pdf or at the Extension office. These forms are due to the Extension office with your fair entry forms no later than June 29, 2012. You must have this form completed and on file in order to sell your animal at the Arkansas Valley Fat Stock Sale – no exceptions! Scrapies Premise I.D. Requirements For those members planning on showing sheep or goats at the Crowley County Days Progress Show or the Arkansas Valley Fair please note: All breeding sheep and all market ewe lambs will be required to have Scrapies ID tags. All does in the market class and all breeding goats will be required to have Scrapies ID tags. Any registered breeding goat with a legible premise tattoo will suffice as a Scrapies ID tag; however, Scrapies ID tags are preferred. Scrapies ID tags can be obtained by calling the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services) at 303-231-5385, or the toll free number at 1-866-USDA-TAG (873-2824). The tags are provided at no cost. We would recommend you call before the end of May, as it might take a month or so to get the tags.
Showmanship Clinic The Otero County Council Officers will be hosting a livestock showmanship clinic on Thursday, June 14, at 6:00 p.m. at the Arkansas Valley Fairgrounds. The clinic will focus on sheep, goats, beef, horse and swine. Please DO NOT bring your animal; animals will be provided. Each species will be presented twice, except beef and horse, so you can attend more than one or listen twice. Topics to be covered include grooming, judge’s questions, nonverbal communication, positioning in the ring, and how to prepare before you ever get to the showmanship ring. The evening schedule will be: 6:00 – 6:30 – Beef & Goat 6:30 – 7:00 – Sheep & Swine 7:00 – 7:30 – Horse & Goat 7:30 – 8:00 - Sheep & Swine Livestock Scale for Sale The Crowley County Jr. Fairboard will be selling a small livestock scale at Maier Auction Barn on Saturday, May 19 (Note change of date.) The sale starts at 9:00 a.m. The scale is perfect for sheep, goats and swine. It is an older digital scale, and can be viewed at Maier Auction Barn Display Boards for Sale Display boards for General and Family and Consumer Science projects are available at either County Extension Office. Cost is $2.50 each. Arkansas Valley Fair Entries Due date for entries for the Arkansas Valley Fair is June 29. Entry forms and premium books will be available from your club leader the week of May 21. Fair dates are August 13- 19, 2012. Crowley County Days Crowley County Days will be held July 21-28, 2012. Due date for entries is June 29. Entry forms and premium books will be available by May 21 at the Crowley and Otero County Extension offices. Kitchen Manager Needed The Otero County 4-H Council is looking for someone to serve as manager for the 4-H kitchen at the Arkansas Valley Fair. This is a paid position. The manager is responsible for ordering food and supplies, overseeing the preparation and serving of food, must be knowledgeable of safe food handling procedures, and capable of supervising and guiding youth and adults. If interested in this position, please contact Brooke no later than June 7. Ford Truck Raffle Is your club looking for a fundraiser? Sell Ford Truck raffle tickets. Your club will get 40% of each ticket you sell. Call the Extension office today and pick up tickets to be sold. The truck will be at the Arkansas Valley Fair and in the parade. Make arrangements to sell tickets during the fair. Tickets will be sold $5.00 each or 5/$20.00. Four cash prizes will also be given out.
