Otero County Mentoring Program The 2012 4-H Council officers will continue the mentoring program. Mentors have the opportunity to encourage and guide younger members, while at the same time enrich their own 4-H experience. Mentors will be available to help new 4-H members with their questions and projects. New members that would like to receive help through this mentoring program are asked to contact the Extension office in order to be assigned a mentor. Those participating in the program will receive a phone call from the mentor to arrange for the needed assistance. Only those members requesting the mentoring assistance will be contacted. Council Meetings The next County Council meeting will be Thursday, June 7, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. at the Extension Office. A requirement for club completion is that you attend a council meeting. Please remember to get that meeting out of the way and not wait until the last minute. Clubs please remember that you need at least one representative at every council meeting. Arkansas Valley Jr. Show Meetings The next Junior Show Committee meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. on May 30 at the Extension Office. Otero County News Foundation Pool Party The 4-H Foundation Pool Party will be July 17, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. at the La Junta “Wipe-Out” Pool. We will also hold an Otero County 4-H Council meeting at this time. All members that received grants or loans from the Foundation will need to give a short presentation either at the swim party or at the annual meeting in October. Hot dogs & buns, drinks and table service will be provided. Each family is asked to bring a salad or dessert. Please let the Extension Office know how many people are coming from each club no later than July 16, 2012. Award Sponsors Needed Sponsors are needed for awards for a number of projects at the Arkansas Valley Fair. Cost to sponsor an award is $25.00. If you know of someone interested in sponsoring an award, please have them contact the Extension Office. Award sponsors are needed for the following projects: • Senior Dairy Goat Showmanship • Grand Champion Poultry Meat Pen • Junior Rabbit Showmanship • Intermediate Rabbit Showmanship • Senior Rabbit Showmanship • Grand Champion Ornamental Chicken • Grand Champion Commercial Rabbit • Grand Champion Breads • FFA Sweepstakes Chapter Award Stacy Storey Memorial Award All Junior and Intermediate members, regardless of your projects, are encouraged to apply for the prestigious Stacy Storey Memorial Award. The Storeys would like to visit personally with each applicant. The judging for this award will take into consideration the following areas: Club participation County activities and participation Record books Showmanship (where applicable) Care of animals and facilities (where applicable) To apply, members must write a letter stating 4-H activities, offices held, school activities, and what 4-H means to you and submit the information to the Extension Office by June 1 st . Junior and intermediate members are those who are 13 or younger as of December 31, 2011. The award is presented at the Achievement Banquet. Community Service Project – Fairgrounds Cleanup May – Dams & Sires June – Cloverleaf Livestock July – Sand & Sage Please notify the Extension Office of the date your club will be cleaning.
Fair Award Sponsors Needed Summer is here and Crowley County Days will be here soon. You are once again required to obtain sponsorship for the Grand Champion Awards given at the Crowley County 4-H & FFA Progress Show. You must obtain two $25 sponsors or one $50 sponsor to be eligible to show at the 2012 Crowley County Days 4-H and FFA Progress Show. The continued support of businesses, families, and individuals that have sponsored in past years is greatly appreciated. We are also always looking for new sponsors; think about places that you do business with on a regular basis. Remember that award choices are on a first come basis, so get your sponsors early so they get the award of their choice. If you have trouble getting sponsors please contact Brooke at the Extension office and she will give you names to ask and help you get your sponsors. Remember that all sponsorships must be in the Extension office by 4:00 p.m. on June 29 for the sponsor to be properly recognized during Crowley County Days. Pick up your sponsor form today. Top Sponsor Collector The Jr. Fairboard has developed an incentive program for members. The member who brings in the most dollars of sponsorships will be recognized with an award of their choice. Crowley County News 2012 Crowley County Junior Fairboard The next Crowley County Jr. Fairboard meeting will be on Monday, July 2, 2012, at the Courthouse Annex basement meeting room at 7:00 p.m. Council Meetings Reminder The next 4-H Council meeting will be Monday, May 21, at 5:30 p.m. at the Crowley County fairgrounds. Wild Things 4-H Club The next Wild Things 4-H Club meeting will be May 6 at 2:00 at the Community Library in Ordway. Please remember that the club has rules that you must attend 50% of the meetings and 50% of the activities to complete. It is essential if you are going to be a member to attend meetings. Crowley County 4-H Council Report By: Andy Garcia, Reporter Crowley County 4-H Council held the Meat Quality Assurance Class at the Senior Citizen hall on the 29 th of March. Members of the council helped with MQA presentations and clean up. At our meeting we talked about the concession stand and hiring a manager. We decided not to hire a manager and as council along with Brooke, Susan and parents will run the concession stand like last year. We talked about running concessions for movie night but decided it would be better to offer the application onto the Wild Things 4-H club as they are a big group. Our next meeting is May 21, 2012 at 5:30PM, at the Crowley County Fairgrounds. 4-H has given me insights for my future and has given me leadership to help me in the future. Chris Harris
