In the Tower: Mel Bochner Picasso’s Drawings, 1890–1921: Reinventing Tradition<br />

The Baroque Genius <strong>of</strong> Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione<br />

included eighty works, the majority <strong>of</strong> which came from<br />

the <strong>Gallery</strong>’s rich holdings <strong>of</strong> the artist’s prints and drawings.<br />

Organized according to recurrent themes in his<br />

work—biblical journeys, the memory <strong>of</strong> the antique, the<br />

Flight into Egypt, religious nocturnes, and fantastic physiognomy—the<br />

exhibition also explored his innovations in<br />

technique. Castiglione’s works and comparative examples<br />

were shown side by side, underscoring the serial aspect <strong>of</strong><br />

his creativity.<br />

Civic Pride: Group Portraits from Amsterdam comprises<br />

two long-term loans from the Amsterdam Museum and<br />

Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, and features two larger-than-<br />

life renderings <strong>of</strong> the Governors <strong>of</strong> the Kloveniersdoelen<br />

by Govaert Flink and Bartholomeus van der Helst. These<br />

exceptional works, on view adjacent to the Dutch portrait<br />

galleries in the West Building for five years, immortalize<br />

the civic pride <strong>of</strong> the men who governed the<br />

Kloveniersdoelen, the building where one <strong>of</strong> Amsterdam’s<br />

three militia companies held its meetings. The exhibition<br />

was funded by a generous gift from the Hata Foundation,<br />

and the fully illustrated brochure was funded through the<br />

generosity <strong>of</strong> Mrs. Henry H. Weldon.<br />

This year, the <strong>Gallery</strong> displayed one <strong>of</strong> Japan’s most celebrated<br />

cultural treasures, Colorful Realm <strong>of</strong> Living Beings<br />

by Itō Jakuchū, in its entirety for the first time outside <strong>of</strong>
