UTM Description<br />

Rio Sapoa 2 3608 3339 205 m a.s.l. 100 m stretch <strong>of</strong> riffle below a pool with depths up to more<br />

than 3 m. The river width was 5-20 m. Riffle substrate: stones up to 50<br />

cm diameter, <strong>and</strong> coarse gravel. Pool substrate: s<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e silt, with<br />

some large stones <strong>and</strong> dead wood. Pool banks partly overhang<strong>in</strong>g soil.<br />

Riparian vegetation: large overhang<strong>in</strong>g trees, but large areas <strong>of</strong> water<br />

were open to <strong>the</strong> sky. No significant aquatic macrovegetation.<br />

K<strong>in</strong>gfishers, herons <strong>and</strong> caimans were observed. Locality sampled <strong>in</strong><br />

June 1998 <strong>and</strong> February 1999.<br />
