(American Eagle +P 130-gr. FMJ) to
a high of 1,622 (90-gr. Glaser Safety
Slug). The majority of “standard”
loads from others ranged in the 1,200
to 1,400 fps range, using bullets from
100 to 130 grains. While none of the
loads I used went over 2.25" at 25
yards, most hovered around 1.5".
The winning accuracy load was the
CorBon 125-gr. JHP at 1,278 (over my
chrono), giving a 1.25" group. We’ve
done testing at Handgunner and found
if you remove the two outside shots
from a 5-shot group fired handheld, it
pretty much duplicates what a Ransom
Rest would produce with the same gun.
It sort of helps to take the human element
out of the equation. If I took off
the two “flyers” from that 1.25" group,
I got .80" or so. Most groups would
indeed hover around 1" using that test,
and that sort of accuracy from a Baer
pistol is about what you’d expect. And,
this sort of accuracy from a .38 Super is
simply great.
All in all, we fired a bit more than
500 total rounds through the Stinger,
at targets during careful sessions, and
during informal plinking at a 25 yard
steel swinger and a 100-yard gong. The
gun ran 100 percent, and the low recoil
— even with hot loads — made it a real
pleasure to shoot.
An Idea
Think about this for a minute. With
the .38 Super Stinger, you get an 8+1
capacity, remarkable accuracy, all-steel
heft for stability, and a platform firing a
125-gr. JHP at close to 1,300 fps, which
is, friends — .357 Magnum territory.
It’s flat-shooting enough for coyotes
and could, in careful hands, take small
whitetail deer. Recoil is light due to the
light bullets, but the high velocity gets
bullets “out there” fast, so a running
coyote at 100 yards could be in serious
danger. So would any miscreant who
decided to exercise his “poor choice of
victim” option.
I noticed when shooting at my 100yard
gong, there was a substantial difference
in bullet flight time between a
.45 230 ball load, and anything out of
the .38 Super. With the .45 it was sort of
a “bang, mini-pause, clang.” With the
.38 Super it was “bang/clang” almost
at the same time. And I’ll bet there’s
something to be said for that.
I like the .38 Super Stinger a lot. And
being all-steel, you could likely never
wear it out. I can hear Les laughing,
“Ha! Right. You’re going to wear one
out? Don’t make me laugh. You’re
tryin’ to be funny, right? Right? Ha!”
I always enjoy writing about things
that work, and the .38 Super Stinger
works. What’s not to like
about that?
