consecutive game, a future Division
I college basketball player faced off
with the Gaylord boys basketball
team.
And for the second consecutive ;
game, the Blue Devils used a team .
effort to spring a win.
This time playing against Mount i
Pleasant and all-everything junior
guard Trey Zeigler, Gaylord
scratched out a 64-56 win in front
of the home crowd.

GAYLORD — As the Gaylord
basketball fans walked out to iheir
cars Tuesday the sighs of relief were
visible in the bitter air. The Gaylord
girls basketball team played as if
Tuesday's contest was a must-win,
and executed their game plan to
perfection in a 48-37 home victory
against Mount Pleasant.
"Lverybody did their part and
we finally gol that monkey off our
back," said a happy coach Kelli
Parker.

heroics lift

GAYLORD — Better to win
ugly than to lose pretty.
That's the sentiment with the
St. Mary boys basketball team
following a 52-50 victory where
senior Austin Lawnichak hit a
mid-range jumper with 0.3 seconds
remaining to seal the win.
Lawnichak's heroics were
striking, but was the struggles
of the Snowbirds, who allowed
nine three-pointers to the hotshooting
Trojans.
"1 went into this game thinking
it would
show us whether
we were a good
team or a mediocre
one," said
St. Mary coach
Chris McKenzie.
"1 don't think we
accomplished ei-
ther. I'm ecstaic
we're 3-0, but
tonight we were
a little off our
game."

St. Mary took an 11-8 lead
after the first quarter, but it
quickly evaporated to a 29-22
Central Lake halftime lead.
Late in the third quarter, the
Snowbirds finally began to chip
away, as junior Matt Churches
bulled inside for a lay-up before
junior Peter Spyhalski closed out
the quarter with a triple to cut
the Trojan lead to 42-38.
"In the third quarter, I called
a timeout and told them that
the rest of the game i^all about
heart," McKenzie said. "It would

JOHANNESBURG — Every
basketball team has nights where
the shots simply aren't falling.
But every team does not have
a pressing defense like Johannesburg-Lewiston
does — one
that can overcome a struggling
offense.
J 'L's athleticism helped it grind
out a 45-34 home victory against
pesky St. Mary Wednesday in what
was a defensive struggle.
"A win is a win, but we did not
play well," said J-L coach Heather
Huff. "Not one person shot the
ball well. It seemed we were a
little off-balance. We weren't in
