The undefeated St. Mary ^Snowbirds notched another win Tuesday night with a 65-37 bruising of visiting Bellalre. Three Snowbirds hit double figures on the night. Sopomore Kan Fitzak led the way with 18 points while senior Brian Shamock added 12 points and 14 rebounds. The third player to reach double digits was Matt Sides. Coach Bob Kierczynski was very pleased with the outcome. "We played excellent defense," KlerczynskI said. "We only shot 30 percent from the floor, but we played excellent defense and that was what won It for us." Prior to the game, the Snowbirds had earned a 10th place rank among the state's Class D teams. A tough test for the Gaylord grapplers Is fast approaching as they look to take down a highly regarded Petoskey Northmen team. The Northmen went 35-4-1 over the past two seasons and return 11 of 14 starting wrestlers from last year's 16-2-1 team. Hopefully the Devils will reverse the developing trend against Petoskey in which they have lost 10 out of the last 13 league titles. Starters Lisa Lahman and Jannl Ebarliart unfortunately had to make up a college entrance test they had missed earlier in the year, so a young Gaylord team was forced to step up their game. "We had four players out there who had never been in a single varsity game before." Dawson said. "But 1 think tha kids played well, once we started to build up some confidence." Gaylord (3-0) took a five point lead in to the fourth quarter only to find themselves down three with time running out. Jake Cuca hit a big threepointer to force overtime. Both teams had leads in the first two extra periods only to let them slip away. Finedly Antony Rudel hit a free throw with under a minute to go to put Gaylord up four and seal the win. Todd Cherry led the way for Gaylord with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Jake Cuca finished with 13 points. Solid defense by Matt Green, Jason McArt, and Billy Boyce helped seal the deal. Wolverine 55, Vanderbilt 33 WOLVERINE — It was a tale of two halves Thursday in Wolverine. Visiting and underdog Vanderbilt put together an excellent first half and carried a 21-19 lead into the locker room. But the Wildcats turned up the pressure in the second half and carried out a 55-33 victory. "The kids showed a lot of improvement and played as well as a Vanderbilt team has played in the last couple years in the first half," said Yellowjacket coach Jason Mathias. "We started turning the ball over in the second half, and when that happens there's not enought timeouts in the world to stop the bleeding." Wolverine coach Gary Matelski said he was unhappy with his team's poor shooting and defensive effort in the first half, but said it improved in the third quarter. "They were more aggressive than we were to start the ballgame," Matelsid said. "We changed up our defense in the second half and they had a hard time adjusting. We were able to turn the tempo of the game up." Junior Josh Brush led a balanced scoring attack for Wolverine (3-0,2-0 Northern Lakes Conference) with 14 points, while junior Lance Parkas had 12 points and senior Justin Evans had 10. Junior Eric Webber led Vanderbilt (0-4. 0-2 NLC) with 13 points and 10 rebounds. while junior Flip Mannino had six points and seven rebounds. Mathias credited Nathan Peterson with excellent effort off the bench and Steve Snider with running a solid point guard. The two teams could match up again at the Wolverine Holiday Tournament Dec. 29-30. Vanderbilt and Alba will square off on Dec. 29, with the winner facing the host Wildcats Dec. 30. St. Mary 67, Onaway 42 GAYLORD—The St. Mary boys basketball team is hitting the holiday break exactly where it wants to be. The Snowbirds improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Ski Valley Conference with a 67-42 victory against Onaway Thursday. "We got off to the start that 1 hoped we would," said St. Mary coach Chris McKenzie. "We played strong overall and did a good job picking apart their zone. The lead kept getting bigger and bigger as the game went along.' Junior Clay Becker had an excellent game for the Snowbirds. scoring 26 points and grabbmg 10 rebounds. "He was outstanding," McKenzie said. "He was doing everything very well." St. Mary led 21-13 after the first quarter and 39-22 at halftime. Schlicher, who had a game-high 12 points and 16 rebounds, scored ei^t of the Cardinal points. "We did good enough to get the win." Huff said. "We can definitely leam from tonight." A highlight of the game was when senior fan favorite Zach Kline stepped in and knocked down a three-pointer to a rousing ovation from the crowd. With Darren Dobbyn not playing and Ty Knaj>p fouled out, the Cardinals bit into a sizeable Warrior lead and cut it to six points midway through the fourth. However, the experienced Warriors hit their free throws down the stretch in a 65-52 victory. "I'm happy with our effort," said J-L coach Barry Owens. "We cut into the lead, but we couldn't close the gap. They are a very good team and we fell behind big in the first half." •Forest Area (4-0, 2-0 Ski Valley Conference) led 30-16 at halftime, before the Cardinals (2-1. 1-1 SVC) began to cut into the lead in the second half. "Things were going well in the first half," said Vanderbilt coach Jason Mathias. "But we came out in the second half and laid an egg. It seemed like there was a lid on the bucket. The Wildcats led 66-28 heading into the fourth quarter, before taking the foot off the pedal. 'We played pretty well at times," said Wolverine coach Gary Matelski. "It was hard to keep our intensity up and to keep us fired up. But. we played hard and that is the key." Junior Josh Brush led Wolverine with 17 points, while senior Eric Purgiel and junior Lance Farkas each added 11 points. Senior Justin Evans and junior Jeremy Brush each added nine points in the victory. The Wildcats, who fell behind 6-5 early, led 19-8 after the first quarter and 42-21 at halftime. Ten of the 11 Wolverine players scored in the victory. The Blue Devils, ranked No. 9 in Division 2, scored a huge 45-25 win against the Cardinals, who were recently ranked as well. "The kids really stepped it up against a good team," said Gaylord coach Jerry l.ajoie. Against Big Rapids, Justin Gehringer (103), Chadd Hall (112). Danny Sharrard (135), DougTyrari (160) and Brian Bliss (275) all won by fall. Winning by decision was Jake Armstrong (119), Drew Pichan (125). David Maves (130) and MikeTaubitz (J71). The Blue Devils then were perfect in a 82-0 thumping against Carson City-Crystal. Senior Andrew Olds (145) pinned the Eagles' best wrestler in 2:05. Winning by fall was Pichan, Maves, Sharrard, Dillon Hunt (140), Olds.Tyran and Taubitz. Hall won by decision, while Armstrong, Jacob Clute (152), Joe Kucharek (215) and Bliss all won by void. Gaylord is at the prestigous Marquette Challenge today, where they'll see some of the better teams in Michigan and Wisconsin. VARSITY B — The Gaylord Varsity B wrestling team recently competed in the Harrison Quad, downing Standish- Sterling, and tying, but falling in criteria, to Remus Chippewa Hills. Gaylord tied Chippewa Hills 36-36, but the Warriors had won more matches, so they emerged winners. The Blue Devils then downed Standish-SterUng 42-27. Going 2-0 for Gaylord was Dylan Newton, Trevor Knouse, Colton Roberts, Tre Borowiak. Collin O'Neill and Russ Stingley, the Wrestler of the Meet. Going 1-1 was Brad Duski. Alex Webber. Jeff Guethlein and Caleb Tomes. The team then competed in the Ogemaw Heights Tournament, with Newton and Knouse both dominating the competition and taking first. Webber and O'Neill took second for Gaylord, while Brandon Mikolowski and Guethlein took third. JUNIOR VARSITY — The Gaylord junior varsity wrestling team competed at the Ogemaw Heights Tournament last Friday, with Jacob Clute going 5-0 to take first place. Rory Ellafrits also took First for the Blue Devils, while Shay Ellafrits and Charles Nortley each took second.
