Gaylord dodges bullet in victory vs. Central

GAYLORD —The Gaylord
boys basketball team
dodged a bullet Thursday
night, swiping away a pesky
Traverse City Central team
that gave the Blue Devils all
they could handle in a 65-60
decision.
Gaylord (4-0, 2-0 Big
North Conference) seemed
to have control throughout
the game, but the
well-coached Trojans kept
battling back and actually
took a 49-46 lead on a threepoint
play by senior Doug
Burke with 5:20 remaining.
The senior-laden Blue
Devils stepped up when it
counted, however, as seniors
Lucas Wickert, Joe
Arnold and Nick Freeman
all hit big shots down the
stretch.
The biggest, however,
came from Gaylord's lone
junior starter, point guard
Kurt Dutcher, who canned
a momentous triple with
1:30 remaining to push
the lead to 59-54. The Blue
Devils also made 6-of-6 free
throws in the game's final
minute.
"Our experienced players
really stepped it up down
the stretch and we made our
free throws," said Gaylord
coach Pat Enders. "It was a
good win. We didn't play our
best game, but that's O.K."
Senior Quinn Woodhouse
dazzled throughout
the game, leading all scorers
with 23 points. He had
nine first-quarter points
as the Blue Devils went up
19-9.
The Trojans (1-1, 1-1
BNC) began cutting into the
lead in the second quarter,
but still were behind 30-
24 at halftime. It may have
been closer, were it not for
the continued strong shooting
of junior Dustin Mastej,
who stepped off the bench
to hit a couple of big shots,
including a three-pointer.
Woodhouse had another
10 points in the third quarter
to help weather a Central
run and give his team
a 45-40 lead heading into
the fourth.
"They hit a lot of shots,"
Enders said. "Their coach
does a great job and their big
guys had a great game."
Wickert added 14 points
for Gaylord, while Dutcher,
Mastej and Freeman each
chipped in eight.
Burke led Central with
16 points, while senior Kelly
Long added 14 points and
sophomore Dylan Roe had
10.
Gaylord is now off to one
of its best starts ever, hitting
the Christmas break undefeated.
The Blue Devils now
focus on the St. IgnaceTournament
Dec. 29-30. where
they will open up against
a good team in Escanaba.
The Eskymos have defeated
Gaylord in the tournament
in each of the past two seasons.
