30 volunteers pack Kiwanis Christmas baskets

Community Schools community
education building
built offices in the old cafeteria,
the Kiwanis Christmas
basket packing had
to be moved to the vacant
Northern Appliance building
on Old 27 South.
Cheney had to arrange
for tables, heaters, snowplowing
and set up a new
area for volunteers to maneuver
shopping carts
through to load boxes with
food. He also reported being
appreciative for the free
use of the building.
Cheney began volunteering
for the Kiwanis
Christmas basket program
because of the involvement
of his father, Howard
Cheney, a 25-year volunteer.
'We want to help
families..'

Club of Gaylord president,
this year marked her
sixth year of helping with
the program.
According to McBride,
items included in baskets
are ham, potatoes, vegetables,
bread, fruits and other
nonperishable foods.
"The Take Time to Care
program helped a lot or
we would have had a lot
more families," McBride
reported.
Families who are adopted
through the Time
to Care program do not
receive food from the Kiwanis
Christmas basket
program.
Cheney begins preparing
for Thursday's event in October
by collecting uniform
egg boxes from Walmart Supercenter
and Glen's Market.
He collects nonperishable
food from area schools
and takes about a week to
set up the "store" for basket
packing.
An estimated 30 volunteers
helped pack baskets,
Thursday, including the
Blunt sisters. Hannah. 8.
and Brittany, 12.
"We want to help families
out at Christmas who
don't have enough food,"
said Brittany during the annual
event.
