unthreaten<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>put to improv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> safety and health <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SME. Such<br />

organisations are already arbiters <strong>of</strong> a code <strong>of</strong> conduct such as <strong>the</strong> British<br />

Medical Association or Law Society, by which its members should abide <strong>in</strong><br />

order to be protected by <strong>the</strong> organisation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> event <strong>of</strong> a claim or compla<strong>in</strong>t<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong>m. These organisations <strong>of</strong>ten provide an additional l<strong>in</strong>k to <strong>in</strong>surers<br />

by recommendation, which as previously <strong>in</strong>dicated, may reward progress<br />

best health and safety practice via <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>centive <strong>of</strong> lower <strong>in</strong>surance premiums.<br />

In addition to motivation, <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> psychological factors <strong>of</strong> relevance may be<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional identity and <strong>the</strong> behavioural regulation required to conduct<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess appropriate to <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession represented <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> SME.<br />

Trade Associations<br />

Trade associations are networks which may shape SME bus<strong>in</strong>ess practice. On<br />

<strong>the</strong> positive side, <strong>the</strong>se may enhance safety and health through <strong>the</strong> design <strong>of</strong><br />

work<strong>in</strong>g conditions or exchange <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mal advice. Negative <strong>in</strong>fluences may<br />

be exerted, via obligations, deadl<strong>in</strong>es and spread<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> bad practice habits.<br />

However, <strong>the</strong> positive contribution <strong>of</strong> trade associations has been encouraged<br />

recently <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiatives subsidised by <strong>the</strong> European Health and Safety Agency,<br />

where <strong>the</strong>re have been a large number <strong>of</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>t ventures between associations,<br />

health and safety organisations, and SMEs. Trade associations have also been<br />

useful <strong>in</strong> identify<strong>in</strong>g and distribut<strong>in</strong>g health and safety material that is<br />

perceived to be more relevant to <strong>the</strong> nature and sector <strong>of</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> SMEs. For<br />

example, hairdressers were more likely to read material sent to <strong>the</strong>m by <strong>the</strong><br />
