Russell <strong>of</strong> Liverpool, author <strong>of</strong> The Scourge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Swastika <strong>and</strong><br />
former Deputy Judge Advocate General in Germany, whose war-<br />
crime unit had caught many Nazi <strong>of</strong>ficials but failed to trace<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>Eichmann</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s whereabouts after <strong>the</strong> war.<br />

Kol Yisrael corresp<strong>on</strong>dent dedicated to those who took part in<br />
bringing <str<strong>on</strong>g>Eichmann</str<strong>on</strong>g> to trial in Israel: “<strong>the</strong> nati<strong>on</strong>’s gratitude is given<br />
to <strong>the</strong> men who, due to underst<strong>and</strong>able reas<strong>on</strong>s, must remain in<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir gray an<strong>on</strong>ymity even in <strong>the</strong>ir greatest moments.” The senior<br />
corresp<strong>on</strong>dent reports that in an <strong>of</strong>f-<strong>the</strong>-record meeting between<br />
newspaper editors <strong>and</strong> security <strong>of</strong>ficers (what was called <strong>the</strong><br />
“editors’ committee,” a comm<strong>on</strong> practice in those days for<br />
meetings where government <strong>of</strong>ficials would give background<br />
informati<strong>on</strong> to members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> press) <strong>on</strong>e editor said that <strong>the</strong><br />
achievement <strong>of</strong> those people would be remembered for a hundred<br />
years. “If we have <strong>on</strong>e reservati<strong>on</strong> to that statement,” adds <strong>the</strong><br />
corresp<strong>on</strong>dent, “it would have to do with <strong>the</strong> number: what was<br />
achieved by <strong>the</strong> Security Service’s <strong>of</strong>ficers will undoubtedly be<br />
remembered in Jewish history as l<strong>on</strong>g as it will be written.” The<br />
circumstances dem<strong>and</strong>ed that <strong>the</strong>se individuals deal with this man<br />
