Mr. Wilfred de Graaf (WG) is a Ph.D. student in mathematics, working<br />

with Prof. Odo Diekmann. Although his Ph.D. project is not in the history<br />

of mathematics, Mr. de Graaf often participates in projects relating to Islamic<br />

mathematics and Iran.<br />

Mr. Henk Hietbrink (HH), mathematics teacher in Nieuwegein, formerly<br />

working on a “teacher in research” project on Frans van Schooten, co-supervised<br />

by JH, is continuing his work as an official (unsalaried) guest of the Mathematics<br />

Department (History of Mathematics Research Group), UU, 0.0 fte.<br />

• JH is member of the Dutch Royal Academy of Sciences (KNAW), and<br />

executive Member, Academie Internationale d’Histoire des Sciences.<br />

• NWO approved the Ph.D. project “Transcendental curves in post-Cartesian<br />

mathematics” for VB (Vrije Competitie, Exacte Wetenschappen)<br />

• JH received the Otto Neugebauer Prize on July 2 at the 6th European<br />

Congress of Mathematicians, Kraków.<br />

• JH is adjunct professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, King<br />

Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.<br />

• On September 10, Sanne Spoelstra received the price for the best Master<br />

Thesis of the Utrecht Graduate School of Natural Sciences (GSNS). Her<br />

part of Wat is Wiskunde (WISB101, fall <strong>2012</strong>, group of no less than 40<br />

• VB taught Concrete Meetkunde (Concrete Geometry, WISB241, 7,5 ECTS)<br />

to approximately 20 students. The following subjects were studied (presentations<br />

were held and essays were written by the students): Linda Nab,<br />

• From <strong>Jan</strong>. 1 - Oct. 31, <strong>2012</strong>, JH was Director of Studies of the Bachelor<br />

Program in the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, University<br />

of Utrecht.<br />

• In nov 2011 - jan. <strong>2012</strong>, JH taught Infinitesimaalrekening B, i.e. multivariable<br />

calculus (WISB133, 3.75 ECTS). 112 (out of 125) students passed<br />

this course.<br />

• In sept-oct <strong>2012</strong>, JH taught Infinitesimaalrekening A, i.e. single-variable<br />

calculus, (WISB132, 7.5 ECTS) to a group of ca. 140 students. On<br />

November 8, <strong>2012</strong>, 99 students passed this course (including one student<br />

who still had to turn in his inleveropgaven assignment and whose result<br />

has been submitted on dec. 3). On <strong>Jan</strong>uary 3, 2013, an additional 11<br />

students passed the course.<br />

• In the course Caleidoscoop 1 (WISB104), JH gave one lecture on March<br />

20, <strong>2012</strong> and he supervised one student project: Gerard van Beelen, Pablo<br />

Bosch, Niels Wardenier, π.<br />

• JH held a lecture on “the fourth dimension” (twice) on the Open Day for<br />

prospective students of the Bachelor program in Mathematics, November<br />

24.<br />

• In the course Communiceren in de Wiskunde (WISB106) JH gave the<br />

(obligatory) lecture including student’s assignment on “scientific integrity”<br />

on Dec. 4.<br />

• SW taught Wiskunde voor chemici (Mathematics for Chemists, SK-BWK1B<br />

2011/12, blok 2 en 3, together 5 ECTS), 39 students passed the course.<br />

• SW taught Wiskundige Technieken (Mathematics for Physicists, WISN-<br />

101, blok 1, 7,5 ECTS), [thus far, 42 students have passed], and WISN-102,<br />

blok 2, 7,5 ETCS; [results will follow in the report for 2013].<br />

• From March-Sept. <strong>2012</strong> and together with Dr. Andre Henriques, SW was<br />

co-organizer of the weekly colloquium in the Department of Mathematics.<br />
