Mr. Wilfred de Graaf (WG) is a Ph.D. student in mathematics, working<br />

with Prof. Odo Diekmann. Although his Ph.D. project is not in the history<br />

of mathematics, Mr. de Graaf often participates in projects relating to Islamic<br />

mathematics and Iran.<br />

Mr. Henk Hietbrink (HH), mathematics teacher in Nieuwegein, formerly<br />

working on a “teacher in research” project on Frans van Schooten, is continuing<br />

his work as an official (unsalaried) guest of the Mathematics Department<br />

(History of Mathematics Research Group).<br />

Mr. Jan P. <strong>Hogendijk</strong> (JH), Jan. 1, <strong>2011</strong> - , Professor of History of Mathematics<br />

in Utrecht University (0,5 full professor, 0,5 associate professor).<br />

Mr. Goossen Karssenberg (GK) M.Sc., mathematics teacher in Den Helder,<br />

finished his “teacher in research” project in Islamic tilings, funded by NWO, on<br />

August 31, <strong>2011</strong>. The project was jointly supervised by Prof. Dr. Jan van Maanen<br />

(Freudenthal Institute for Mathematics and Science Education) and JH. Mr.<br />

Karssenberg continues to work in the same subject as a guest of the History of<br />

Mathematics Research Group. See the website http://www.goossenkarssenberg.nl<br />

Mrs. Kim Plofker, who was a postdoctoral fellow from 2004 to 2006, was<br />

awarded a prize because of the project she did in Utrecht and therefore she will<br />

be mentioned in this report.<br />

working with JH.<br />

Honors and Awards<br />

• Dr. Kim Plofker, Union College, Schenectady, USA (who worked in<br />

Utrecht from 2004 to 2006 as a postdoctoral fellow) received the Brouwer<br />

Medal of the Koninklijk Wiskundig Genootschap at the Dutch Mathematical<br />

Conference in Twente on April 14. The Brouwer Medal is awarded<br />

every three years; in <strong>2011</strong> it was awarded by the Koninklijk Wiskundig<br />

Genootschap in the “subfield of history of mathematics”. Her prize lecture,<br />

“Mathematics and its worldwide history”, was published in Nieuw<br />

Archief voor Wiskunde, vijfde serie, 13 no. 1 (2012), pp. 45-53.<br />

• JH is member of the Dutch Royal Academy of Sciences (KNAW), and<br />

executive Member, Academie Internationale d’Histoire des Sciences.<br />

• JH is adjunct professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, King<br />

Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. beginning<br />

July 1, <strong>2011</strong>.<br />

• SW received the Senior Kwalificatie Onderwijs in the summer of <strong>2011</strong>.<br />

• On June 22, 2010, the report of the “Research Review of Mathematics during<br />

20032008 at the six Dutch Universities of Amsterdam (UvA), Amsterdam<br />

Mathematics teaching<br />

• VB taught the following three werkcolleges (tutorial groups) in the fall of<br />

<strong>2011</strong>: Linear Algebra A (WISB121), Infinitesimaalrekening A (WISB132,<br />

in part), and an interactive group Wat is Wiskunde (WISB101) He also<br />

supervised two Caleidoscoop 1 essays (WISB104), both on the topic ”On<br />

Regular Polygons, Eulers Function and Fermat Numbers”. The essays<br />

were written by the student groups (1) Guido Baardink, Christian Nesenberend,<br />

Koen Schalkwijk; and (2) Martijn Hidding, Rens de Haas.<br />

• In <strong>2011</strong>, JH was Director of Studies of the Bachelor Program in the Department<br />

of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, University of Utrecht.<br />

• JH taught Infinitesimaalrekening B (Vector Calculus) to a group of ca.<br />

115 students in nov.-dec. 2010. On Jan, 20, <strong>2011</strong>, 79 students passed this<br />

course (3,75 ECTS credits). On March 17, 18 more students passed this<br />

course.<br />

• In the series Caleidoscoop (WISB104), JH gave two lectures on Feb 8 and<br />

• SW is involved in a project to develop the DWO (Digitale Wiskunde<br />

Omgeving = Digital Aids in Mathematics Teaching), together with Sietske<br />

Tacoma, Peter Boon, Egbert Mulder.<br />

• SW is involved in the development of an educational program in mathematics<br />

in the Boerhaave Museum in Leiden.<br />

Miscellaneous teaching<br />

JH taught a course “Influence of Islam on Western science and civilization”<br />

(course code 201000205, 7.5 ECTS) in the Department of History in December<br />

2010 and January <strong>2011</strong>. 22 students passed this course.<br />
