Spa<strong>in</strong> – Shahtoosh shawls 97<br />
In December 1999, follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>vestigations by TRAFFIC Europe, <strong>the</strong> Spanish authorities<br />
seized n<strong>in</strong>e shahtoosh shawls from a fashion boutique <strong>in</strong> Marbella. The owner of <strong>the</strong> shop was<br />
prosecuted, <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ed 2,025,000 pesetas (£7,000).<br />

In 1998, <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Medical Centre of Utrecht was found guilty of sell<strong>in</strong>g animal <strong>and</strong> plant<br />
parts <strong>and</strong> packages claim<strong>in</strong>g to conta<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>gredients from CITES-listed species. Investigations by<br />
TRAFFIC led to a raid <strong>in</strong> 1996 where eight sea conta<strong>in</strong>er loads of traditional east Asian<br />
medic<strong>in</strong>es were seized, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g packaged medic<strong>in</strong>es produced <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a stat<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>y<br />
<strong>in</strong>cluded derivatives of tiger bone, rh<strong>in</strong>o horn, bear gall bladder, musk deer, saiga antelope <strong>and</strong><br />
pangol<strong>in</strong>. Forensic tests substantiated many of <strong>the</strong>se statements. In addition, a wide range of<br />
plant <strong>and</strong> animal parts were seized such as hawksbill turtle shell <strong>and</strong> dried orchid roots.<br />
The court sentenced <strong>the</strong> company’s owner to three months <strong>in</strong> prison <strong>and</strong> a f<strong>in</strong>e of HFL10,000<br />
(£3,200), <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> company itself was f<strong>in</strong>ed HFL80,000 (£26,000) of which HFL50,000<br />
(£16,250) was suspended.<br />
