7 Promote deterrence of illegal <strong>wildlife</strong> <strong>trade</strong> through:<br />

• <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> risks of detection through <strong>in</strong>creased resources directed to<br />

enforcement;<br />

• encourag<strong>in</strong>g speedier process<strong>in</strong>g of cases;<br />

• seek<strong>in</strong>g to reduce rewards of <strong>the</strong> illicit <strong>trade</strong> through disrupt<strong>in</strong>g markets for illegally<br />

<strong>trade</strong>d goods – particularly by rais<strong>in</strong>g awareness of <strong>the</strong> threat <strong>the</strong> illegal <strong>wildlife</strong><br />

<strong>trade</strong> poses to endangered species; <strong>and</strong><br />

• lower<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> threshold of tolerance of <strong>the</strong> illegal <strong>trade</strong>, through education <strong>and</strong><br />

campaign<strong>in</strong>g (see also 8 below).<br />

8 Consider <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g a due diligence scheme <strong>and</strong> code of conduct for <strong>the</strong> legal <strong>wildlife</strong><br />

<strong>trade</strong>, draw<strong>in</strong>g legal <strong>trade</strong>rs <strong>in</strong>to more effective partnerships with regulators, <strong>and</strong><br />

enhanc<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir role <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>telligence-ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g to challenge illegal <strong>trade</strong>rs.<br />
