Introduction
Emergency Incident Statistics
As the Business Owner of the SMS Incident database I am pleased to be able to introduce the 2010/11
edition of the New Zealand Fire Service Emergency Incident Statistics Book.
Every emergency incident attended by the New Zealand Fire Service or the Rural Fire Authorities requires
that the officer in charge complete a form summarising the important features of the incident. As this book
shows, these incidents are not just fires but also motor vehicle accidents, floods, rescues and many other
diverse activities. With just under 78,000 of these incidents this year the information needs to be
processed and audited by a dedicated team, who are also responsible for preparing the summary data
presented in this book, and for constantly seeking imaginative ways of presenting complex information.
The data is used in research projects directed at fire safety improvements to building standards and
codes, consumer products and community safety programmes for delivery by our staff or for multi-agency
campaigns.
The New Zealand Fire Service and the National Rural Fire Authority are committed to the concepts of
business excellence. This means that we commit to high standards in terms of data collection and
processing. But the excellence framework also demands that the organisation manage its business based
on facts. Many of the most important facts about the way we do our work can be extracted from
information contained in this book. Taken together with information such as that contained in the census
data, trends and correlations are revealed that can be used to drive the service in better directions.
This book is published in electronic format on the New Zealand Fire Service website at
http://www.fire.org.nz/About-Us/Facts-and-Figures. Staff can access an online version, updated daily,
using the SMART Reports system via the intranet.
The team welcomes comments on how this information could be presented more effectively, or what
information particular groups might like to see.
