Heterothops binotatus Erichson as a subsequent<br />
citation of Heterothops binotatus<br />
(Gravenhorst). Erichson described the species<br />
without attribution to another author, but<br />
the two are probably the same.<br />
Heterothops xantholinoides (MacLeay,<br />
1873: 141) (ex Philonthus) isanew synonym<br />
of Heterothops fauveli Bernhauer and<br />
Schubert, 1916: 412. Heterothops fauveli is<br />
a replacement name for the junior primary<br />
homonym Heterothops flavicollis Fauvel,<br />
1878b: 559. Lea (1925: 230) cited H. flavicollis<br />
Fauvel as a synonym of Heterothops<br />
xantholinoides (MacLeay), which is a junior<br />
primary homonym of Neobisnius xantholinoides<br />
(Wollaston, 1864: 577) (ex Philonthus).<br />
Because Heterothops flavicollis is a<br />
synonym of Heterothops xantholinoides<br />
(MacLeay) and both are junior homonyms,<br />
the latter is thus a junior synonym of Heterothops<br />
fauveli, the replacement name for<br />
Heterothops flavicollis.<br />
Leptacinus batychrus (Gyllenhal, 1827:<br />
480) has an older synonym, Leptacinus diaphanus<br />
(Marsham, 1802: 514), which has<br />
been a synonym of Leptacinus batychrus<br />
since 1858 and was not cited as valid after<br />
1899 (article 23.9.1.1). In the last 50 years<br />
at least 43 articles by 33 authors have been<br />
published listing Leptacinus batychrus Gyllenhal<br />
as valid (article 23.9.1.2). A list of<br />
these citations is provided in the forthcoming<br />
catalog for the family (Herman, in press).<br />
Leptacinus batychrus (Gyllenhal) is a nomen<br />
protectum and L. diaphanus (Marsham) a<br />
nomen oblitum (article 23.9.2).<br />
Leptacinus filum Olliff, 1887: 477, is a junior<br />
primary homonym and new synonym<br />
of Leptacinus blackburni Lea, 1925: 215.<br />
Lea proposed L. blackburni to replace Leptacinus<br />
filum Blackburn, 1888: 7, which was<br />
a junior primary homonym of Leptacinus filum<br />
Kraatz, 1859: 111. However, although<br />
Olliff (1887) cited Blackburn as the author<br />
of L. filum, his article was published before<br />
Blackburn’s. The two species are presumably<br />
the same since both authors used essentially<br />
the same characters and their specimens are<br />
from the same type locality.<br />
Loncovilius germaini (Scheerpeltz, 1933:<br />
1344) is a junior synonym of the older species,<br />
Loncovilius chilensis Bernhauer and<br />
Schubert, 1914: 332. Both names were pro-<br />
posed to replace the junior primary homonym<br />
Loncovilius cribripennis (Germain,<br />
1903: 412) (ex Philonthus).<br />
Loncovilius heeri (Blackwelder, 1944:<br />
144) (ex Quedius) is an unnecessary replacement<br />
name for Loncovilius aeneipennis<br />
(Fairmaire and Germain, 1861: 428) (ex<br />
Quedius). Blackwelder replaced the Fairmaire<br />
and Germain name because he thought it<br />
to be a junior secondary homonym of Quedius<br />
aeneipennis (Heer, 1834: 75) (ex Staphylinus).<br />
However, Heer’s name is a nomen<br />
nudum, as there was no description, definition,<br />
or indication (article 12.1). Loncovilius<br />
aeneipennis (Fairmaire and Germain) is resurrected.<br />
Megalinus glabratus (Gravenhorst, 1802:<br />
178) has an older synonym, Megalinus ferrugineus<br />
(Rossi, 1790: 248). Megalinus ferrugineus<br />
(Rossi) has been a synonym of Megalinus<br />
glabratus since 1840 and was not cited<br />
as valid after 1899 (article 23.9.1.1). In<br />
the last 50 years at least 37 articles by 26<br />
authors have been published listing Megalinus<br />
glabratus Gravenhorst as valid (article<br />
23.9.1.2). A list of these citations is provided<br />
in the forthcoming catalog for the family<br />
(Herman, in press). Megalinus glabratus<br />
(Gravenhorst) is a nomen protectum and M.<br />
ferrugineus (Rossi) a nomen oblitum (article<br />

Neobisnius villosulus (Stephens, 1833:<br />
251) has an older synonym, Neobisnius palmula<br />
(Gravenhorst, 1802: 49). Neobisnius<br />
palmula has been a synonym of Neobisnius<br />
villosulus since 1868 and was not cited as<br />
valid after 1899 (article 23.9.1.1). In the last<br />
50 years at least 26 articles by 23 authors<br />
have been published listing Neobisnius villosulus<br />
(Stephens) as valid (article 23.9.1.2).<br />

Notolinus picticornis (Blackburn, 1888: 7)<br />
(ex Leptacinus), a species that is now a synonym<br />
of Notolinus socius. The description of<br />
Leptacinus picticornis Olliff appeared the
Change language
