Staphylinus flavicornis Gmelin had never before<br />
been cited in Quedius or Distichalius,<br />
and Gmelin’s name may be unknowable. For<br />
these reasons Q. cinctus should continued to<br />
be used as the valid name of the species.<br />
Quedius deuveianus Coiffait, 1983: 346 is<br />
a new synonym of Quedius kashmirensis<br />
Cameron, 1944: 13, because it was proposed<br />
as a replacment name for Quedius deuvei<br />
Coiffait, 1983a: 168, which was synonymized<br />
with Q. kashmirensis.<br />
Quedius horsti Coiffait, 1978: 222 is an<br />
unnecessary replacement name for and junior<br />
synonym of Quedius smetanai Korge, 1971:<br />
47. The name regarded as older, Quedius<br />
molochinus aberration smetanai Roubal,<br />
1949: 45, was described as an aberration and<br />
is therefore unavailable.<br />
Quedius iablokofi Coiffait, 1967: 396 is an<br />
unnecessary replacement name for and junior<br />
synonym of Quedius transcaucasicus Iablokov-Khnzorian,<br />
1961: 146. Quedius transcaucasicus<br />
Gemminger and Harold, 1868:<br />
572, which Coiffait thought was the senior<br />
homonym, is an unavailable name.<br />
Quedius limbatus (Heer, 1839: 281) has an<br />
older synonym, Quedius attenuatus (Gravenhorst,<br />
1802: 27), which has been a synonym<br />
of Quedius maurorufus Gravenhorst or<br />
Quedius limbatus since 1849 and which was<br />
not cited as valid after 1899 (article<br />
23.9.1.1). In the last 50 years at least 29 articles<br />
by 20 authors have been published listing<br />
Quedius limbatus (Heer) as valid (article<br />
23.9.1.2). A list of these citations is provided<br />
in the forthcoming catalog for the family<br />
(Herman, in press). Quedius limbatus (Heer)<br />
is a nomen protectum and Q. attenuatus<br />
(Gravenhorst) a nomen oblitum (article<br />
23.9.2).<br />
Quedius luteomaculatus Scheerpeltz,<br />
1958: 23 is a junior synonym of the older<br />
Quedius gridellii Scheerpeltz, 1933: 1442,<br />
which is a replacement name for Quedius picicornis<br />
Gridelli, 1922: 128, 131. Coiffait<br />
(1978: 262) listed Quedius gridellii and Q.<br />
picicornis as junior synonyms of Q. luteomaculatus.<br />
Quedius nitipennis (Stephens, 1833: 242)<br />
has an older synonym, Quedius quadripunc-<br />
tatus (Zetterstedt, 1828: 76), which has been<br />
a synonym of Q. attenuatus (sensu Gyllenhal,<br />
1810: 311) since 1860 and was not cited<br />
as valid after 1899 (article 23.9.1.1). Gyllenhal’s<br />
use of Q. attenuatus is a misidentification<br />
of Q. attenuatus (Gravenhorst, 1802: 27)<br />
but has been cited erroneously as a valid,<br />
available name by many authors; the Gravenhorst<br />
name is a junior synonym of Quedius<br />
limbatus (Heer, 1839). In the last 50 years at<br />
least 31 articles by 25 authors have been<br />
published listing Quedius nitipennis (Stephens)<br />
as valid (article 23.9.1.2). A list of<br />
these citations is provided in the forthcoming<br />
catalog for the family (Herman, in press).<br />
Quedius nitipennis (Stephens) is a nomen<br />
protectum and Q. quadripunctatus (Zetterstedt)<br />
a nomen oblitum (article 23.9.2).<br />
Quedius nouristanicus Coiffait, 1979a:<br />
559 is a junior primary homonym and new<br />
synonym of Quedius nouristanicus Coiffait,<br />
1978: 158. Coiffait described the same species<br />
twice; the type locality, size, characters<br />
cited, and aedeagal illustrations are the same<br />
for both species.<br />
Quedius plagiatus Mannerheim, 1843a:<br />
231 has two older synonyms, Quedius glaber<br />
(O. Müller, 1776: 98) and Quedius flavopterus<br />
(Geoffroy, 1785: 166), both of which<br />
have been synonyms of either Quedius laevigatus<br />
Gyllenhal, 1810: 306 or Quedius plagiatus<br />
since 1840 and, until 1996, neither<br />
was cited as valid after 1899 (article<br />
23.9.1.1). In the last 50 years at least 26 articles<br />
by 21 authors have been published listing<br />
Quedius plagiatus Mannerheim as valid<br />
(article 23.9.1.2). A list of these citations is<br />
provided in the forthcoming catalog for the<br />
family (Herman, in press). However, Ádám<br />
(1996: 247) resurrected Quedius glaber,<br />
thereby compromising application of article<br />
23.9.1. Use of the older name will create significant<br />
instability. The younger name has<br />
been cited as valid in many publications and<br />
is known by many workers, and thus its use<br />
should be maintained. The matter will be referred<br />
to the Commission; meanwhile, use of<br />
the junior name is to be maintained (article<br />
23.9.3).<br />
Quedius puncticollis (Thomson, 1867:<br />
164) has an older synonym, Quedius variabilis<br />
(Gyllenhal, 1810: 303). Quedius variabilis<br />
has been a synonym of Quedius fulgidus
