moculia sublaevis (Fauvel, 1874) (ex Leptotyphlus)<br />

and Entomoculia grouvellei (Fauvel,<br />

1890) (ex Leptotyphlus). Blackwelder (1952:<br />

149) designated Entomoculia grouvellei<br />

(Fauvel) as the type species of the genus by<br />

subsequent designation. According to Coiffait<br />

(1955: 66; 1959: 279; 1972: 390) both<br />

species were misidentified by Croissandeau.<br />

Coiffait, in the same three articles, cited Entomoculia<br />

jeanneli Coiffait, 1955, which he<br />

named for Croissandeau’s misidentification<br />

of E. grouvellei, as the type species of the<br />

genus. The species named by Fauvel, Leptotyphlus<br />

grouvellei, isinMesotyphlus.<br />

Article 70.3 permits designation of a misidentified<br />

species (or the taxonomic species<br />

actually involved) as type species. Entomoculia,<br />

with more than 120 species, is a commonly<br />

used, well-known name that, in the<br />

last 50 years, has been cited in at least 34<br />

articles written by 11 authors. In the last 50<br />

years more than 100 nominal species have<br />

been described in Entomoculia. To preserve<br />

this longstanding use, and with the sanction<br />

of article 70.3.2, I propose to accept Coiffait’s<br />

(1955: 66) designation of E. jeanneli<br />

Coiffait (� E. grouvellei sensu Croissandeau)<br />

as the type species of Entomoculia.<br />

MEGALOPSIDI<strong>IN</strong>AE<br />

Eumegalopsidia<br />

Megalopsidia (Eumegalopsidia) isanunavailable<br />

name and Megalopinus (Polycyrtopsidia)<br />

isavalid subgenus. All the species<br />

listed in Megalopsidia (Eumegalopsidia) are<br />

hereafter in Megalopsidia (Polycyrtopsidia).<br />

Eumegalopsidia was proposed by Benick<br />

(1952: 77) as a subgenus of Megalopsidia<br />

Leng, 1918 (� Megalopinus); he (1952: 86)<br />

included 22 species from Africa and the<br />

Indo-Australian region. Scheerpeltz (1972:<br />

95) described a new subgenus, Megalopsidia<br />

(Polycyrtopsidia), with one new species, Megalopsidia<br />

(Polycyrtopsidia) sanguinitriguttata.<br />

Puthz (1974a: 135) transferred Megalopinus<br />

sanguinitriguttata Scheerpeltz, 1972,<br />

to Megalopinus (Eumegalopsidia). Because<br />

M. sanguinitriguttata Scheerpeltz is the type<br />

species of Polycyrtopsidia, the two subgenera,<br />

Megalopinus (Polycyrtopsidia) and Megalopinus<br />

(Eumegalopsidia), are synonyms;<br />

Puthz (1974b: 136) listed the former as the<br />

junior synonym of the latter.<br />

However, Benick designated no type species<br />

for Eumegalopsidia, so his use of the<br />

name is unavailable (article 13.3). A type<br />

species was published in the 1952 Zoological<br />

Record (1953, vol. 89(13): 246), but the designation<br />

was anonymous and was done after<br />

1950 and thus is an unavailable act (article<br />

14). If a type species were designated now,<br />

the author and date for Eumegalopsidia<br />

would be the author and date of the type species<br />

designation. No type species is designated<br />

herein for Eumegalopsidia and it remains<br />

unavailable.<br />

OMALI<strong>IN</strong>AE<br />

Anthobium<br />

Anthobium Leach (1819: 175) was published<br />

without a description but with one<br />

available species, ‘‘Omal. melanocephalum’’,<br />

which was the type species by original designation<br />

and monotypy. However, because<br />

the species was cited by Leach without an<br />

author, there has been confusion about which<br />

of two species is the correct type, Staphylinus<br />

melanocephalus Fabricius (1787: 222) or<br />

Silpha melanocephala Illiger (1794: 596). At<br />

the time, both species were reported in Britain<br />

by Marsham (1802: 127, 523), who<br />

(1802: 127) credited Silpha melanocephala<br />

to Panzer, who attributed it to Illiger. In fact,<br />

the authorship of the type species was resolved<br />

in the original publication. Samouelle<br />

(1819: 375, 484) cited Marsham’s (1802:<br />

127) use of Silpha melanocephala as the species<br />

intended by Leach (1819: 175).<br />

Tottenham (1939: 225) cited ‘‘melanocephalum<br />

Marsham, 1802’’ as the type species<br />

of Anthobium without stating which of Marsham’s<br />

usages applied. Later, he (1949: 357)<br />

presented the type species of Anthobium as<br />

‘‘Anthobium atrocephalum Gyllenhal, 1827<br />

(� Silpha melanocephala Marsham, 1802<br />

[nec Illiger, 1794])’’. Marsham’s use of Silpha<br />

melanocephala has been considered a<br />

misidentification of Anthobium atrocephalum<br />

since at least 1840 (Erichson, 1840: 870).<br />

And, whereas Silpha melanocephala sensu<br />

Marsham (� Anthobium atrocephalum) is<br />

known in Britain, according to Pope (1977),<br />

neither Phyllodrepa melanocephala (Fabri-
