SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE @ YOUR LIBRARY! On a typical day, more than 700 people visit the Wauconda Area Library. This fullservice public library district serves the residents of all or portions of the villages of Wauconda, Island Lake, Lake Barrington, Port Barrington, Lakemoor and Volo -more than 26,000 residents. We offer a collection of more than 125,000 books, periodicals, DVDs and audio recordings, as well as a wide variety of state-of-theart electronic resources, including free high-speed wired and wireless access to the Internet throughout the library. There truly is something for everyone! Nearly 6,000 reference questions are answered each month by the library's well-trained staff. Hundreds of library events are scheduled throughout the year specifically for children, young adults, families and adults. These free programs are designed to entertain and inform and to introduce the public to the library's services. We hope you will visit us often and take advantage of all the library offers, whether to pick up tonight's entertainment, hunker down with your research project or school work, attend a library program or just cozy up with a good book and a perfect cup of coffee , tea or hot chocolate. We invite you to relax, work at your own pace and enjoy your library. NEW SERVICES @ YOUR LIBRARY Recently, the library has added a self-serve café and coffee bar called the Cozy Corner Café. The café features bistro-style furnishings and comfortable seating. Enjoy custom-brewed hot beverages at very reasonable prices. Our commercialgrade Keurig coffee machine brews a perfect cup of coffee, tea or hot cocoa in just 30 seconds using purified water. There are dozens of gourmet coffee brands and flavors to choose from, including Caribou, Gloria Jean’s, Tully’s, Green Mountain, Bigelow and Celestial Seasonings. 20 2009-2010 Wauconda Community Guide The library's teen area, known as "The Zone," is a popular hangout for teenagers after school. Teen-oriented books, magazines and multimedia materials, including video games for checkout, can be found here. The fun, comfortable seating and special displays make this an inviting place for teens to study together or just hang out. Other new services include a self-service checkout station, free wireless highspeed Internet access for laptop computers, downloadable eBooks and eAudiobooks using MyMediaMall and pre-loaded audiobook iPods and Playaways. The library’s extensive DVD collection now includes TV series and Blu-ray discs. LIBRARY OF THE YEAR The Wauconda Area Library was named Library of the Year in 2005 by the North Suburban Library System (NSLS), a consortium of 650 academic, public, school and special libraries in north suburban Cook, Kane, Lake and McHenry Counties. The NSLS announcement states, "The Library of the Year Award is presented to one library in NSLS in recognition of its contributions to the development of the NSLS library community. The Wauconda Area Public Library District has won this award because, while it has long been a good example in the community, this year the library has taken its unique mix of community focus, creativity and collaboration to the next level of service excellence. The Wauconda Area Public Library District is 'the little library that DOES!' The staff and administration are active contributors to system-wide and statewide projects." LIBRARY CARDS Library cards are available to any resident of the Wauconda Area Public Library District and may be used in most Illinois libraries. A library card can be obtained at the Information Desk with the required proof of home address and valid identification, first time free of charge and thereafter for a $2 fee. Parents or guardians may obtain cards for children of ages five through 14 and are responsible for all materials checked out by children. Keychain cards available upon request for patrons over the age of 16. Library cards must be presented to check out any library materials. www.wauclib.org Your Online Gateway to the Library and Beyond The library’s web site is your online portal to information about library programs and services as well as to its many valuable online information resources. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with the library catalog, online services and databases, program listings and registration, request forms, guides and online assistance available via the Wauconda Area Library web pages. Use the web-based library catalog with your PIN number to place holds, renew items checked out and much more! Use your library card to access dozens of valuable web-based information services that only library cardholders can access. Students are glad to know that the library offers access to Tutor.com’s Live Homework Help, a webbased service specifically for helping students from 5th through 12th grade with their schoolwork. The library also hosts and maintains the Wauconda Area Community Information Network (www.waucondaarea.info) which features the comprehensive web-based Community Calendar listing hundreds of local events each month. LIBRARY EVENTS FOR ADULTS AND TEENS Library events are scheduled throughout the year. These free programs are designed to entertain and inform and to introduce the public to the Library's services. CHILDREN’S SERVICES There’s never a dull moment in the Children’s department, located on the library’s lower level, serving infants through 5th graders and their parent/caregivers.
