Stock assessment is required to ascertain whether catch levels are at sustainable maximum yields, and to ensure that harvest levels do not exceed recruitment levels. In addition, assessment of the ecological impacts of fishing methods is needed to ensure habitat damage is not occurring. o The Island of Nyororo and its sub-tidal habitats have large numbers of grassroots stakeholders. Its position as a stop off and trading post between Mafia and the mainland makes it likely to be of high importance to a much wider group than those who stay there and their dependants. A wide and comprehensive stakeholder analysis is required to determine both the value and impacts of this settlement. This will enable effective management of the reserve area, whilst maintaining the traditional important role Nyororo plays in the sea trading route between Mafia and the mainland. We recommend that the welfare of these stakeholders is taken into account during the planning process to ensure that management actions are both effective and inclusive. o Ecologically and commercially valuable gastropods such as the triton trumpet shell (Charonia tritonis) and bullmouth helmet shell (Cypreacassis rufa) are present on both NIMR and MBIMR. There is evidence that these are harvested along with C. tigris for the trade in marine curios. C. tritonis and C.tigris are listed by CITES as banned for international trade. Further research needs to be undertaken to establish appropriate management strategies. o In several cases the reserve areas are delineated in such a way as to omit areas of high ecological importance such as reef crests and portions of the islands. This is especially the case at MBIMR and SIMR. It is advised that the gazettements are revised to allow for effective management and to ensure that areas of high ecological importance are adequately protected.
