Deep in the countryside, the following famous<br />

_ Lake Titisee, with a boat trip, shopping along<br />

the Seestrasse, soaking up the lakeside views.<br />

_ Furtwangen (30 min) with its Clock Museum.<br />

_ Triberg (20 min), with towering waterfalls and<br />

workshops, where cuckoo clocks are still handcrafted.<br />

_ Gutach (40 min) with its living history<br />

museum.<br />

Return to Freiburg and stay overnight.<br />

TIP See the world’s biggest cuckoo clock, near<br />

DAY 4: GENGENBACH (P. 27) <strong>–</strong><br />

BADEN-BADEN (P. 21)<br />

After breakfast, continue to romantic Gengenbach,<br />

with its cobbled stone streets, narrow<br />

lanes and half-timbered houses <strong>–</strong> perfect for<br />

strolling. Highlights include:<br />

_ Historic town center, market square, fountain.<br />

_ 200-year-old Town Hall that becomes the<br />

world’s biggest Advent calendar each Christmas.<br />

Take a break with a Vesper, a hearty meal of<br />

local breads, Black Forest Ham, and cheeses.<br />

Carry on to Baden-Baden, whose natural hot<br />

mineral springs have drawn visitors for 2,000<br />

years. Check in to hotel. Go to the Caracalla<br />

Therme (pool) for a swim or spa treatment.<br />

Dinner and overnight in Baden-Baden.<br />

TIP Try your luck at the glamorous casino.<br />

DAY 5: BAIERSBRONN (P. 22)<br />

After breakfast, explore Baden-Baden on foot or<br />

in an elegant horse-drawn carriage.<br />

Highlights include:<br />

_ Strolling on the Lichtentaler Allee.<br />

_ Museum Frieder Burda for modern art.<br />

Take a break at the legendary Café König <strong>–</strong> with<br />

a slice of their Black Forest Cake. In the afternoon,<br />

drive the scenic Black Forest Mountain<br />

Road, B 500, to Baiersbronn. Take an easy walk;<br />

stop at a hiking hut, such as the Sattelei, for a<br />

snack. Many huts are run by Michelin starred<br />

local restaurants. If traveling by train, check<br />

schedule for frequency. Return to Baden-Baden.<br />

DAY 6: PFORZHEIM (P. 32; 44) <strong>–</strong><br />

STUTTGART (P. 77) <strong>–</strong> ESSLINGEN<br />

After breakfast, continue to Pforzheim. The<br />

’City of Gold’ has a long tradition of watch and<br />

jewelry making. Highlights include:<br />

_ Schmuckwelten Pforzheim, Jewelry World,<br />

where you can watch craftsmen at work, then<br />

buy their creations.<br />

Drive on to Stuttgart. Check in to hotel.<br />

Take the local train to medieval Esslingen, in<br />

vineyards overlooking the Neckar.<br />

Highlights include:<br />

_ Half-timbered houses, churches, museums.<br />

Have dinner in Esslingen in a local restaurant.<br />

Return to Stuttgart, overnight.<br />

TIP Pforzheim’s world-class Jewelry Museum.<br />

DAY 7: TÜBINGEN (P. 90) <strong>–</strong> HOHEN-<br />

ZOLLERN CASTLE/HECHINGEN (P. 94)<br />

After breakfast, continue to Tübingen, a historic<br />

university town. Highlights include:<br />

_ The old town, half-timbered houses, cobbled<br />

streets.<br />

_ Punting in a boat on the Neckar.<br />

_ Neckar Island in the heart of town.<br />

Take a break on Marktplatz, by the Town Hall.<br />

Drive to the fairytale Hohenzollern Castle in the<br />

Swabian Mountains. Take a guided tour.<br />

Highlights include:<br />

_ The lavishly-decorated rooms.<br />

_ The dazzling 1888 Crown of German Emperor<br />

William II, King of Prussia.<br />

Return to Stuttgart for dinner and overnight.<br />

TIP In December, Tübingen hosts chocolART,<br />
