Known as the Gateway to the Swabian Mountains, Aalen is an
hour from Stuttgart, the capital of SouthWest Germany. There is
plenty to see in the city center, with its winding streets and halftimbered
houses. Now on the UNESCO World Heritage list, the
Limes Museum stands on the site of what was the once largest
Roman cavalry fort. Visit the Tiefer Stollen mine to see how iron
ore was extracted; in Fachsenfeld Castle, the cultural treasures
offer an insight into centuries of baronial lifestyle.
