Der Effekt nimmt willkürlich “Natur Gerauesche” (Hundegebell, Vogelgezwitscher, Wasserrauschen etc.) her und ersetzt die musikalischen Töne mit diesen Geräuschen. Die Konvertierung des Songs in maschinell produzierte Naturgeräusche, mit einem Programm, welches weltweit für unabhängige Kunstproduktion verwendet wird, funktioniert als Metapher für Grundthesen Metzgers Arbeit - die Umwelt und dessen Zerstörung durch Technik sowie auch für den Aufruf zur maschinell produzierten Kunst. The title of the track relates to Metzger’s influence on Pete Townshend. The song “My Generation” by The Who was an expression of the rebellion at that time which led Townshend to regularly smash his guitar. He did this for the first time in 1962 after he had listened to a lecture by Gustav Metzger on Auto-destructive Art. A MIDI (computer-generated file) version of “My Generation” was downloaded from one of the many MIDI databases on the Internet. It was then imported into the Apple music editing program “Garageband”. The MIDI file is automatically broken down into a number of tracks, in this case six – a number of guitars, drums, bass etc. These tracks can then be manipulated by superimposing various effects and other instruments. The “natural sounds” effect was chosen as the background to every track. The effect takes natural sounds (a dog barking, birds twittering, water rushing etc.) on a random
asis and replaces the musical notes with these noises. The conversion of the song into machine-generated natural sounds, using a program which is used throughout the world for independent art production, functions as a metaphor for the basic theses of Metzger’s work – the environment and its destruction by technology, and for the call for machine-generated art.
