The leaseholder and owner of the Autodrome was Harry Toste, alias Straps-Harry, a transvestite with long, dyed-blonde hair, garishly green knee stockings held up by red suspenders. In the 90s he could often be seen in the Café Anal, a gay and lesbian punk pub in Kreuzberg. In 2004 Straps-Harry died at the age of 97. A few days after the concert in the Kuckuck I climbed over the fence and explored the site. It was bounded in the north by the Berlin Wall and in the west by the Gropius Building. Suddenly the richly varied song of the nightingale rang out. The song was deafening, almost painful, intense and penetrating. The nightingale was singing to lure a mate, to mark its territory or to drown out the sound of the passing cars. With an exhibition entitled “The Topography of Terror” in 1987 the history of this overgrown area was placed in a broader context. After a number of unsuccessful attempts, work was begun in the autumn of 2007 on building a museum. Here, on the site on the Prinz-Albrecht-Straße in the nightingale’s territory, was where Himmler, Heydrichs and Kaltenbrunner once worked at their desks, in the headquarters of national socialist crime and repression: the office of the Gestapo, the SS leadership and the Reich Security Central Office. 1 Die Tödliche Doris, 1980–1987
