QHT
Dear Reader,
this time there is so much to report of the international
show scene that we have to postpone things like
‚Horses of the Week’ until next issue in order to reduce
the file for your download. It’s great to see that
more and more nations use Quarter Horse Today as a
platform for their news
Looking at the news, you’ll find that you’ll read
mostly about reining. This is due to happenings like
qualifiers for World Reining Masters and the FEI European
Championship of course. But there is so much to
talk about the versatility of the American Quarter Horse
and its talents for other disciplines, but we are still
a little short of news from NSBA or NCHA at the
moment. This will hopefully change in the future. So
please keep us informed about anything
concerning the great American
Quarter Horse in Europe!
Enjoy this issue!
Czech Republic. More information will follow soon.
German Western Associations united in
anti-doping and anti- inhuman treatment
***** A very positive consequence was the result of a
meeting of the German western riding and breeding
associations APHA, ApHCG, DQHA, EWU, NRHA, NSBA
and PHCG on April 9. The focus was on getting a common
agreement on how to react when doping regulations
or regulations concerning inhuman treatment of
horses are not respected. The associations agreed
upon establishing a common task force that is create
a common basis of acting when regulations are not
respected. In Addiction, a common jury is to be created
which will enforce common punishment in these
cases. The task force is to start working within the
next two months.
Talking to ROY MARCHINTON
(by Milan Cizerle, photos: horsemotion)
***** Roy Marchinton has been in Germany now since
2000. The Austrailian trainer trains especially for Reined
Cowhorse, Reining and Cutting. He is working at
Schmid’s Horse & Cattle Ranch in Alling near Munich.
Roy was very successful both in Australia and Germany.
In Australia, he was ARCHA Working Cowhorse
Champion and Res.Champion, three times 3rd in the
Australian Futurity, three times WGQHA High Point
Open Cutting and several times finalist in Reining, Cutting
and Work. Cowhorse. In Germany he became
Inter. Germ Champ. Sen.Working Cowhorse 2003 astride
“BB Little Smoker”, EuropameEuropean Champion
Sen. Working Cowhorse 2004, The Challenge 3rd Sen.
Working Cowhorse 2004. Besides this he was three
times Americana finalist (Cowhorse, Reining, Cutting),
Bavarian Champion Sen. Reining Open, High Point Reining
Open and Allaround and DQHA Sen. Cowhorse
Milan Cizerle talked to the trainer about his methods
and tips.
MC: When do you start training young horses?
R.M. You cannot give a time valid for all horses as
you have to look at each individual horse. Some horses
are ready for breaking both mentally and physically at
the age of 2, others simply take longer to grow up and
will be ready at 2 _ or 3. Anyway, all young horses have
to get a thorough basics first.
MC: Do you have a special training concept for
young horses ?
R.M. One thing which is very important for me is
solid ground work. For me, this means about one week
of longeing and getting the horse to accept a bridle
(snaffle) and saddle. Then I start ground-driving them.
Normally I start riding them after three or four weeks.
In the beginning I only walk them as the horses have
to find their balance under the rider’s weight. They
also have to learn to give to pressure and how to change
directions. I proceed with this in the trot/jog and
lope
I think that the horse’s thinking is quite simple: there
is only black and white/right or wrong with no in betweens,
so we have to ask exact questions without maybes
in order to get an adequate response. Horses need
time to think, so I prefer to stop the horse ands let it
relax. This is better than correct it all the time.
6 QUARTER HORSE TODAY 15/05

sport
QHT
Of course, each horse is an individual – just like us
humans. Some learn faster than other, want to work
by themselves, others need more time and repetition.
But in one respect both are the same: you have to be
patient. Don’t put on too much pressure and ask for too
much too soon. There are limits you might cross which
do a lot of damage! They are still babies, you know. But
always remember: whether you’ve got a horse for your
backyard or for showing – you need a good and solid
basis.
practise. So try to relax and be as precise as possible.
MC: Do you prefer special methods in training?
R.M. I love to install a really good and solid basis. I
there is a problem, you better take a step back and
return to your basics. The horse must be sensible of
course and willing to cooperate. Sometimes the reason
is not the horse, but the rider, who was not able to
communicate clearly enough. So take it easy and repeat
your training process.
MC: How do you manage older show horses?
R.M. For me it’s very important that all of my show
horses are ridden outside to relax and get something
else to think about. I jog them in the pasture and
woods, do a little uphill climbing etc. You can’t do the
same thing all the time. All my reiners and cowhorses
will do a trail once in a while.
MC: You are teaching beginners in your clinics in
Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Are there any typical
questions?
R.M. I am mostly asked how and when I start a horse.
The about my training methods and of course how
to correct special problems. E.g. somebody asks whether
you can get a hard mouth with a horse by applying
too much or too constant pressure. I say no – a horse
will not get hard in the mouth but in his head. That is
the real problem. Otherwise there would be no way to
correct that problem and ‘soften’ them up again.
MC: Are there any Tips for Rookie and Novice
riders?
R.M. How to show your horse.
Like most judges I prefer a slow but clean and correct
ride to a fast one with penalties. Of course, a beginner
is nervous, but you’ll get more relaxed and secure with
No Bremen Schimmelhof in May
***** The show management cancelled the traditional
show at Bremen Schimmelhof this year due to only
few nominations. Although there were minimum fees,
only 39 riders had nominated until the deadline. Showmanager
Sylke Stemme says she intends to try it again
next year with a completely different programme.
Damme exceeds expectations
(by Simone Jacob)
***** Normally the Easter Show at Parc-Damme near
Osnabrück was meant to be some kind of a test show
only. Event-Manager Rolf Diekwisch had expected 160
horse-rider-combinations. In the end, he counted 252,
which meant 700 starts. So it will be ‘Next year again
in Damme!’ The show united three associations in one
show:“Erste Westernreiter Union“ (EWU), „American
Paint Horse Association“ (APHA) and „American Quarter
Horse Association“ (AQHA).
The EWU Reining classes were quite successful.
Open Junior Champion was Diana Dammann astride
Docter Jac, Senior Open Champion Albert Schulz astride
„SR Sunrays Command“. The Junior shows in
Western Pleasure and Trail were won by Helga Hommel
astride „Cocky Max Well Power“. The Senior Shows
in Pleasure and Trail and Western Horsemanship all
Ages went to Michaela Kroworsch aus Hannover astride
„Call Me JC Zippo“. She became Allaround Champion
Open. The AQHA-Reining-Junior was won by
Harald Goes astride „Fritz By Lena“, the Senior went to
Stefanie Jahnke astride „Smart Genuine“.
Netherlands: Silver Ranch Contest Oosterwolde
(text by Bea Verselewel, photos by Jose Troullioud)
***** The Dutch Quarter Horse Association hosts
very few AQHA Shows in the Netherlands. For that
reason more and more private training stables start
to organize AQHA approves shows themselves. The
Silver Ranch is one of them. The Silver Ranch, owned
by family De Leeuw, is situated in the north of The
Netherlands and the contest that was held on April
17 was the first AQHA show in that part of the country
in about ten years time. Oosterwolde is not far
from the border with Germany and therefore the
organizers had been expecting some German competitors,
but unfortunately they did not show up. Also
many Dutch riders let the opportunity to try out
their horses go by. All together only 30 combinations
made their presence. The Grand Champion title in
the Halter Stallion class went to the 6-year-old
Magic Power Special (Fritz Power x Magic Obsession)
owned by Sylva van der Wal. In 2004 this stallion
placed 6th in the AQHA rankings of All Time Leading
Amateur Halter Point Stallions. In Western Pleasure
Open AA as well as in Hunter under Saddle Open AA
the stallion placed 4th. The combination also won the
Open Reining AA with a score of 68,5. A score of 68,5
was also given to Evelien Geerlof riding the 7-yearold
gelding HC Mister Dun Jac (Mr BH Jac x Oh Ima
Dun It), bred and owned by Henk van Amstel. Due to
a penalty for a late lead change Belgian judge Jeff
Delaet placed the combination second. The Amateur
Reining was won by the 10-year-old gelding Shining
Leon (Shining Spark x Okie Leona) ridden by Jan Olthof
with a score of 68, also good for the 3rd place in
the Open Reining. Another successful combination
was formed by Amateur rider Ginny
Rozema with her 10-year-old mare Buck
N Bess Daisy (Two D’s Buck x Cutter Bill
Bess). They placed 1st in Showmanship
at Halter, Amateur Western Pleasure
end Open Western Pleasure AA and 2nd
in Hunter under Saddle Open AA. The
16-year old Stallion Sanwood Gold placed
1st in Amateur Trail, 2nd in Open
Trail AA and 1st in Amateur Horsemanship
ridden by Wiebe de Vos. Sanwood
Gold is a son of the recently deceased
Peps Mr Doc out of Hollywood
Harriet.
Despite of the relatively few competitors
that showed up in Oosterwolde,
organizer family De Leeuw is determined
to give the Silver Ranch Contest
another try next year, hoping on German
exhibitors as well.
Belgium Riders rule at TR’s Grand National
(by Bea Verselewel, photos: Jose Troullioud)
Piet Mestdagh-SR Lil Peppy Sprat
***** The TR’s Grand National, hosted by the TR Ranch
in Liessel in the Netherlands, has been a huge success
for Belgium Riders. The double pointed AQHA Show on
April 8 and 9 unfortunately attracted very few competitors,
except for the Reining classes, in which many
riders were schooling their horses for the full slate
NRHA show that on the contrary attracted riders from
the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany. Out of
22 competitors Belgian Bernard Fonck won the Open
Lawson Reining, riding aboard the five-year-old gelding
Trouble by Frosty (Frostys Chic Olena x Commanders
Trouble), owned by Belgian Kathelyn Sterckx. Fonck
showed a nice set of spins and his circles were well
under control, which resulted in a score 144, also the
highest score in the Intermediate Open which was run
concurrently. Second place in as well the Open as Intermediate
Open went to Fonck’s wife Ann Poels, riding the
six-year-old stallion KS Whizaway, owned by Patrick
Norris, with a score 143_. Third place in both classes
went to the six-year-old stallion Coeur D Wright Stuff
(Lenas Wright On x Mist N Smoke), ridden by Dutch
Angelique Ferdinandus and owned by Roy de Bruin, with
a score of 143. Ferdinandus is a member of the Dutch
National team that will attend the FEI European Championship
that will be held in May in Manerbio in Italy.
Belgian Cira Baeck, riding the six-year-old mare
Soft Whizpers (Topsail Whiz x Miss Stepping Jac), was
very successful in the Non Pro division; she won the Non
Pro Lawson Trophy with a score of 142_. Baeck purchased
her horse a month ago from a Non Pro rider and as
for now it seems a good purchase. Cira also ended up
second with a score 142 with the five-year-old stallion
Don Quixotes Escape (Okie Paul Quixote x The Great
Escape), owned by her sister Susy. There was a tie on
the third place for Belgian Piet Mestdagh, riding the
seven-year-old stallion SR Lil Peppy Sprat (Little Chikkasaw
x Jae Bar Hoppie) and Dutch Debby Willems
riding her ten-year-old stallion Docs Golden Partner
(Doc Cinch Bet x Jiggs Partner), with a score of 141. For
Mestdagh this was his second show on his new purchase,
which is well known in the Reining circuit. Last year
the stallion has been shown by Ann Poels and together
they celebrated victory after victory in the Open classes
especially in the German competition. The winner of the
Intermediate Open Pewter was determined by a run off
between Mestdagh and Willems. Unfortunately Mestdagh’s
horse fell out of lead, but despite of that, he had a
nice run with beautiful spins, which resulted in a score
of 140. Willems did not perform as well as in her first
run and ended up with a score 138 and once again a Belgian
rider was awarded with the Trophy. Dutch Jolande
van der Valk (though living in Belgium) made her come
back in the Intermediate Non Pro. She had not been
competing for about a year. Her nine-year-old mare
Whiz N Mist (Topsail Whiz x Misty May Morning) gave
birth to a foal last year and she herself to twin brothers.
But the combination that was part of the World Equestrian
Games in Jerez de la Frontera in Spain in 2002 is
back on the scene again. Van der Valk placed third in the
Intermediate Open.
For the first time ever in the Netherlands TR’s Grand
National hosted NSBA Hunter and Western Pleasure
classes. And again it was a Belgian rider that won the
NSBA Morrison Open Trophy. Out of 7 competitors Christel
Poels won the class with her seven-year-old Stallion
Kay Cees Checkmate (Kay Cees Leaguer x Beckys Melody).
THE ‘FIRST LADY’ OF REINING: PORTRAIT OF
KELLY ZWEIFEL (by Antonella Gliori, photos by Andrea Bonaga)
***** She is definitely the number one lady Open Rider in
Italy and Europe, and this title have been consolidated by
her victory in the last edition of the ITRHA Futurity, held
in the brand new facility of Manerbio, in November 2004:
Kelly Zweifel is the first woman in history to gain the title
of Futurity Open Champion.
Kelly Zweifel was born in Wisconsin, in 1971,and she have
been riding since the early age of eight, in his family
farm. Graduated at the University of Wisconsin, she started
her career in the Reining industry working for Larry
Karsten. At the end of college, she specialized in this
discipline by working for some of the most experienced
trainers in the States, such as Tim Mc Quay, who still defines
her as a ‘sensitive and extremely talented rider, with
great potential and professional attitude’.
Kelly came to Italy after meeting Pietro Artinghelli,
the Italian trainer whom she met in the States, where he
was staying in order to specialize in Reining. After working
for one year for G.R.C Reining Horses, Kelly and Pietro
moved to the breeding facility of Cuoghi Quarter Horses,
near Modena, where they are still working. The
young but determined Kelly immediately starter a series
of incredibile successes in the Italian and European reining
scene. She gained the important title of 1997 Futurity
Reserve Champion, astride the great Alexa Cal Bar
(Snapper Cal bar x Brett’s Tari), one of the horses that
will remain in the heart of Kelly forever. Since then, Kelly
never missed a final in the Open class in all the Special
Events (Futurity/Derby e Maturity), sometimes placing
two or even three horses among the finalists.
Kelly proved to be an extremely professional trainer,
by taking care of her horses from the very beginning of
the training to the show arena: she really matters about
any single detail, with an amazing precision and sensibility.
While reserved, sweet and sensitive in the private
life, she turns out to be a determined, strong and clever
rider in the show arena, and she easily manage to capture
the favour and support of the public, who loves her and
is always willing to see her riding through deep and
powerful goes in every show.
Kelly Zweifel has gained a incredibly rich show
record, from the very beginning of her career, when she
gained the title of Futurity Reserve Champion stride Alexa
Cal Bar, to her greatest success, when she she rode to
the highest step of the podium of the 2004 IRHA Futurity
Open section, riding Master Snapper, an own son of Snapper
Cal Bar and out of Colonel Mistress (by Great Master
Wake, from - Cow Master) . The lady trainer burst on the
scene in the first go round of the twentieth edition of the
E.R.C.H.A. SPRING STAKES
(by Antonella Gliori – photos kind courtesy Andrea Bonaga)
Mauro Taccia with Briga Lynx
***** The new special event, organized by the European
Reined Cow Horse Association, took place in the
new facility of Palasturla in Manerbio, in a week-end
rich of action and performance horses.
The Spring Stake was divided in two classes, Open and
Non Pro, and was reserved to four and five years old
horses, ridden in a snafflebit. 11 were the entries of
the Open class, and 6 in the Non Pro one. Markus
Schopfer, one of the most versatile trainers in Europe,
won the Open division stride the Appaloosa mare My
Mom Won It All, owned by Marco Brunetti of the breeding
centre Morona Appaloosa. Markus performed a
great herd work in both go rounds (score 72 and 74),
and ended with a brilliant fence work, which granted
him the title of ERCHA Spring Stakes Open Champion.
The five year old mare, out of I’m A Doc Olena, the only
appaloosa son of Doc O’Lena, won the ERCHA Derby
2004 in Reggio Emilia, and has always proved her
natural cow sense and attitude in this discipline. Filippo
Masi astride his own Arc Doctor Del Maso (by Doctor
In Diamonds) placed second, with a total composite
score of 414.5, with very good performances both in
Markus Schöpfer My Mom Won It All
the Reined Work and Fencework. Markus also placed
third in the Open class, riding the 4 years old buckskin
mare Reminic’s Hope, (Reminic x Sample Chex, da
Bueno Chex), a full sister of the palomino stallion Buenonic
Chex, owned by Paolo Marasso.
But the true emotions came from the performances
of the Non Pro riders, who have achieved an extremely
good level of technique and quality in this discipline.
The winner of the Non Pro division is Mauro Taccia,
stride his paint stallion Briga Lynx, a four year old
son of Brigalenas Classic x Snow Lady Lynx by Lynx
Super Lasan. The Italian rider had already shown the
horse last year, for Pre-Futurity 2004 and in Americana,
without gaining satisfactory results. In this occasion,
the horse really proved to be extremely talented,
especially in the fence work, in which he proved fast
speed and sudden stops and turns. Taccia have trained
the horse by himself since he was almost three years
old, but he admitted that he did not have much time to
work him on the cows. Nevertheless, the horse came
out as a good fencer, scoring 72 in both the go rounds,
Chic x Arc Oak Cassiopea), a five year old horse, started
in reining by Nic Cordioli for the RD Horses Breeding
Centre, and now trained by Ricky Nicolazzi. The
nice gelding proved his attitude in reining in both Go
rounds, gaining a brilliant 72.5 in the 1st Go (Top Score
of the Reined Work for the whole show) and confirming
his talent in the 2nd Go. Tony defined his horse as a
good, big hearted boy, easy and enjoyable to ride. He
