Take the Opel Astra out onto the road and you’ll find a reassuring new sense of
control. The reason is Opel’s benchmark-setting Interactive Driving System (IDS).
This synchronises steering, suspension and braking. Of course you won’t be
physically aware of its integrating functions such as Anti-lock Braking System (ABS),
Understeer Control Logic (UCL) and the Electronic Stability Program Plus (ESP ®Plus ),
but you’ll certainly notice how more relaxed and secure you feel about driving under
any conditions.
The principal components of the IDS chassis are:
Electronic Stability Program Plus (ESP ®Plus ) with integrated Traction Control, which
stabilises the vehicle by carefully braking up to 3 wheels.
Understeer Control Logic (UCL) is also a feature which selectively brakes when the
vehicle understeers.
The brake system works with improved electronically controlled Anti-lock Braking
System (ABS), Emergency Brake Assist and Cornering Brake Control (CBC).
Electronic Stability Program Plus
(ESP ®Plus ). Controlled brake intervention
on up to 3 wheels counteracts even
extreme understeering (such as sudden
avoidance movements) to maintain
full control over the vehicle.
IDS Plus . The IDS Plus chassis has all the
features of IDS, but also has Continuous
Damping Control (CDC). With this, sensors
monitor changes in the vehicle dynamics
and continually adjust the suspension for
optimum handling and road holding.
The SportSwitch is available with
Sport chassis and IDS Plus . This creates
extra sporting zest by providing a more
responsive and tauter handling. The
result is like having two cars in one.
