A favourite text that was consulted in the Golden Dawn was the
Mathers' translation of The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abra-
Melin the Mage. This was uncovered in the French Library
Bibliotheque de 1' Arsenal. This manuscript was said to have been
delivered by Abraham the Jew to his son Lamech in 1458 A.D. Of
all the magical manuscripts, this is the one that appears to have
been the most effective.
Stories of its power and strength have abounded since its
publication in the 1880's. One of the infamous instances was told
in a letter to the Occult Review and subsequently appeared in
Francis King's book RituaIMagic in Englan8'. We will be looking
at this incident later. The letter was written by a New Zealander,
Hugh (Euan) CarnpbelP2. Campbell was so troubled by the effects
of a ritual using this book that Mrs. Felkin had to break him away
from it. People who knew Campbell at the time of the problems
say his letter was genuine.
Campbell had not done any preparation work before he used
this system33 and this was the cause of the problems. I have
successfully used the Abra-Melin squares (after first doing the
preparation work - modified from the manuscript in~tructions)~~.
One personal example of the effect of this system was when
my neighbour wanted to destroy a garage which was supporting
the bank on which our house sits. No amount of persuading would
change my neighbour's mind and the workmen were to arrive the
next day. That night, I made a magic square ofAbra-Melin. On the

'Vampbell was the highest ranking member of #are Ra at the time of his
death, in mid 1967. Mrs Felkin felt that the bad experience he had with this Abra -
Melin system turned him into an alcoholic (one of the reasons he was never a Chief).
He had opened certain chakras prematurely and when combined with certain forms
