26 Talismans & eivocations of the Golden Dawn
to the First Adam where God created vessels, or pots, but when
life was injected into them they shattered.43&"
One of the first Biblical reference^^^ to the Golem is in Psalm
139:15-16:
My fiame was not hidden fiom you when I was made in the secret
place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your
eyes saw my uniformed G01em~~.
Another early reference in traditional Judaism is in the Talm~d:~'
Rabbi Ravi created a Golem or imitation man and sent him to Rabbi
Zera who found that the Golem did not reply to his questions. He
then realised that the man was not real and returned him to the
dust from which he came.
There is no references as to how the Golem was made by
Rabbi Ravi, though later researchers such as Ra~hi"~, say the Golem
was formed from clay using the Sepher Yetzirah. They cite work
of Rabbi Hananyah and Oshaya who made an animal Golem (a
three year old calf) using the HecaIoth texts and the Sepher
Yetzirah which was also cited in the same Talmudic section49. Rashi
reasoned that if the Yetzirah was used for creating an animal Golem,
then it could be also used to create a human form. Others maintain
that if the Talmudic passage showed that Ravi knew the holy name
of God which gave life to the dead if inserted in their mouth. This
sounds like the Ankh in the Egyptian Book of the Dead.
43 See Kabbalah Unveiled by MacGregor Mathers for his translations of the
Zohar books: Book of Concealment, Great Holy Assembly,Lesser Holy Assembly.
Also the Anatomy of God, translated by Rosenberg also sheds new light on this
formula
See Communications, Organisation and Science. by J. Rothstein. Falcon
Wing Press 1958. In the Introduction, American Physicist Charles A. Muses who
realized the changes certain sounds or vibrations can be injected into inanimate
objects and produce a magnetic field which in turn has an interaction on other
substances. This is the same principle the occultists use in evocation and in ritual.
45 In Daniel 3: we are told of Nebuchadnevar who brought to life a statue
because it was beautiful with a stolen diamond fiom the High Priest.
46 The term body here in the translated versions of the Bible while in rabbinical
literature some have considered that the word Golem relates to the vessel that is not
filled with spirit or life and is analogous with the shell of the first Adam.
47 Babylonian Talmud, Sandhedrin 6Sb:
