This multi-sensory session conjures up the
seaside. Children will explore paintings and
enjoy digging in sand and handling real
seaside objects. They will help us pack
suitcases and go on an imaginary trip to the
seaside. Later they will meet Sammy the

WEE BEASTIES

Children will explore the crazy world of
big bugs and wee beasties in this handson
workshop. They will magnify miniature
creepy-crawlies, find out about their home
life and transform themselves into marvellous

purpose-built museum storage
facility and visitor centre in the
south of Glasgow holds hundreds
of thousands of objects, including
paintings, sculpture, armour,
natural history, archaeological
finds, Ancient Egyptian treasures
and transport and technology.

at the seaside. Children will look at paintings,
dig in sand and handle seaside objects. They

through art. Children will discover the ways
artists show emotion in their art and then make
an expressive self-portrait that says something
about who they are and how they feel.

magical – and real – world of fairy tales.
Children will explore the world of knights,
princesses, unicorns and dragons through

PASSPORT TO THE AFTERLIFE

Pupils will handle real Ancient Egyptian
objects, learn about mummification and
some of the rituals the Ancient Egyptians
believed led to the afterlife, and take part
in a drama about the Weighing of the Heart

Shaping our Landscape

Children will journey through dramatic
landscapes depicted in our sensational
works of art, discovering how the world
around us has been shaped and how artists
have responded to it. Then they will create
their own dynamic 3D landscape using
exciting and unexpected materials.

Scotland. What impact did this have on
people at the time? What legacy did the

exciting transport and technology collection,
your class will find out about physical forces
in this stimulating workshop that explores
pushes and pulls, gravity, friction, magnetism
and air and water resistance. They will also
design, make and test their own vehicles.

Museum Discovery Tour
Second Level, Primary 5–7

Come and explore behind the scenes at
GMRC. This hour-long tour gives pupils a
chance to discover the variety of objects
stored at this unique venue. From paintings
to prams and antelopes to armour, GMRC
has it all. The tour may include object

Rainforest Survival
Second Level, Primary 5–7

In this exciting workshop pupils will explore
the world of the rainforest, handle objects
from the Amazon and learn about the lives
of the people living there. Engaging in
discussions and using role play, they will
make decisions about some of the important
environmental issues that surround this

Young Inventors!

This exciting hands-on science workshop is
geared towards understanding both inventors
and inventions – from television to Concorde.
Learners will join us behind the scenes and
explore our fascinating collections, then
build their own Morse code machine and
send each other secret messages!

SENSE OF THE SEA
Early / First / Second Level, Primary 1–7

FREE for ASL schools
Specially tailored for pupils with sensory
impairment, this session focuses on
multi-sensory activities using smells,
sounds and handling objects. Children
will meet some of our seashore creatures,
including Sammy the Seagull, and have
the opportunity to handle shells, sand and
pebbles. SCN 1-01a
