Our History
When gold was discovered in Omeo in 1851,
the isolated communities of Omeo, Swifts
Creek, Ensay and Benambra changed
dramatically with the influx of visitors. The
need to build a hospital was identified in
November 1891 with incorporation of the
Omeo District Hospital (ODH). Care to the
sick and injured commenced in August 1894
until the devastating 1939 bushfires that
destroyed the original building. A new 19
bed hospital was built in 1940 on a new site
and continues to be utilised to provide acute
and residential care.
Services delivered by ODH have been
regularly reviewed to meet the changing
needs of the community. In 1990, the acute
service was reduced to twelve beds and then
further reviews in September 1993 resulted in
major funding changes to see the organisation
provide four registered acute beds and
outpatients department and ten nursing home
places. In July 1997, the construction of a
purpose built four-bed hostel was completed.
In February 2004, construction commenced on
the full redevelopment of the existing hospital
buildings and service areas. The major works
were completed and the official opening of
the new facility held on 9 th December 2005.
