to more than 5 m thick <strong>and</strong> are commonly separated by<br />

thin mudstone beds (Figs 83, 85). The s<strong>and</strong>stones are<br />

mostly structureless, whereas the conglomerates show<br />

considerable lateral variation, are poorly sorted, <strong>and</strong><br />

always have a coarse-grained s<strong>and</strong>y matrix. Both matrix<strong>and</strong><br />

clast-supported conglomerates occur. The clasts consist<br />

<strong>of</strong> intraformational mudstone, s<strong>and</strong>stone (probably<br />

derived from the underlying Atane Formation), concretions<br />

<strong>and</strong> basement lithologies (Dam et al. 2000).<br />

The amalgamated s<strong>and</strong>stone <strong>and</strong> conglomerate units<br />

are overlain by thinly interbedded s<strong>and</strong>stone <strong>and</strong> mudstone<br />

units with either a gradational or a sharp contact.<br />

These units are up to 30 m thick <strong>and</strong> show a general thinning-<br />

<strong>and</strong> fining-upward trend (Figs 83, 85). They consist<br />

<strong>of</strong> laterally persistent, normally-graded,
