Infrastructure Planning<br />

Summary of Business<br />

Unit Structure Changes:<br />

This division provides dedicated resources that will use Asset<br />

Management principles to develop five-year infrastructure<br />

recapitalization and capability plans. In addition, this division<br />

administers the Capital Cost Contribution Program<br />

During the 2009/10 business cycle, Strategic Transportation<br />

Planning was administered by IAM. However, the majority of this<br />

division’s services were closely inter-connected to transit and<br />

transportation functions delivered through Transportation and<br />

Public Works (TPW). As a result, the Strategic Transportation<br />

Planning division has been re-aligned with TPW. Some functions<br />

relating to transportation asset life cycle management,<br />

infrastructure renewal strategies and funding program<br />

management have been retained by IAM and will be delivered<br />

through the Infrastructure Planning Division<br />

Core Operations and Services provided:<br />

Policy development, strategic planning and design and construction services with respect to<br />

HRM Infrastructure and major corporate assets including, but not limited to:<br />

• 1,760 kms of public road and rights of way totalling 4900 hectares of property<br />

• 847 kms of sidewalk<br />

• 2090 kms of curb<br />

• 87 Bridges<br />

• 844 Public Parks<br />

• 1957 parcels of Public Open Space<br />

• 371 playgrounds, 190 ball fields, 113 general sports fields, 304 sport courts (sport court,<br />

basketball & tennis), 12 skateboard parks, 7 bike parks, 3 outdoor pools and 4 spray<br />

pools<br />

• Over 12,000 hectares of HRM owned property<br />

• 283 HRM owned buildings<br />

• 257 additional buildings containing a municipal interest<br />

Survey, civil engineering design, project management and inspection services in support of<br />

corporate infrastructure initiatives related to HRM owned and managed roads, parks,<br />

playgrounds, buildings and property<br />

Promotion of sustainable infrastructure planning and stewardship of the natural environment<br />

through a range of initiatives and programs such as HRM’s Pesticide By-Law, the nonrecreational<br />

Lake Water Monitoring Program, HRM facility environmental assessments,<br />

measurements of environmental impacts on HRM infrastructure and maintenance of greenhouse<br />

gas (GHG) inventories<br />
