De-escalation Techniques: Self-control
• Appear calm, centered and self-assured - even if you don’t feel it
• Anxiety can make the patient feel anxious and unsafe which can escalate
aggression
• Use a modulated, low monotonous tone of voice
• Do not be defensive
• Even if the comments or insults are directed at you, they are not about you
• Be aware of available back-up resources
• Know that you have the choice to leave or call for help if de-escalation does
not work
• Be respectful even when firmly setting limits or calling for help
• The agitated person is still sensitive to feeling shamed and disrespected
