2 Section 2: CDF 2.1 Introduction The Fermilab TEVATRON has undergone major upgrades over the last three years. The goal is an increase in the luminosity from approximately 1:610 31 cm ,2 sec ,1 achieved in the past to 8:6 10 31 cm ,2 sec ,1 in the near future [1]. This increase of more than a factor of 5 follows from several major improvements in the accelerator, including an upgraded Linac, the replacement of the Main Ring by the Main Injector, and the collection of unused antiprotons by the Recycler. The last factor is particularly important since the generation of antiprotons was and will continue to be the limiting factor in the luminosity. The ultimate luminosity expected from these accelerator upgrades is expected to be as high as 1:6 10 32 cm ,2 sec ,1 . The next collider run is scheduled to begin next year. On the basis of the projected increases in luminosity, CDF anticipates collecting an event sample corresponding to 2 fb ,1 over two or three years, to be compared to the approximately 100 pb ,1 collected thus far. Ultimately the TeVatron may deliver 20{30 pb ,1 over the next six or seven years. The increase in luminosity requires major changes to the apparatus. The bunch spacing will be reduced by about a factor of nine, to 396 ns. (In the high luminosity case of 10 32 cm ,2 sec ,1 , the bunch spacing would be further reduced to 132 ns.) As a consequence, the data acquisition system must be replaced as the older system cannot handle the rate. This provides an opportunity to modernize the system: a pipe-lined design has been chosen which reduces the deadtime to essentially zero. Similarly, the central tracking is inadequate and will be wholly replaced by a similar but substantially improved device. At the same time the ducial coverage is signicantly increased. The inner tracking, based on silicon strips, is much advanced over the previously very successful vertex detector: here again the coverage is greatly increased, and for the rst time three-dimensional tracking will be available. Furthermore, there will be the capability to use vertex tracking in the trigger, which raises the possibility of trigger on b-quark jets. Finally, lepton identication is important for physics analyses and also at the trigger level, so the muon system is being improved, and the forward calorimetry will be replaced allowing better coverage for electrons. The Harvard group is involved in three of the major upgrades projects for CDF: the Central Outer Tracker (COT), the Silicon Vertex Detector (SVX) and the Central Muon Extension (CMX). Our hardware activities are exciting and serve to educate our students well and to provide opportunities for our post-docs to play leading roles inside the collaboration. At the same time, we continue to play an important role in some of the remaining analyses
Section 2: CDF 3 of Run I data. Recently, though, we have begun to organize our analysis resources towards the future. Analysis projects have progressed since the last review. Andrew Gordon completed his measurements of the W mass and a long publication will be nished this summer. Maria Spiropulu has pursued the search for new physics in events with jets and signicant missing energy, and an exciting new result is expected in the upcoming months. Stephen Bailey continues to develop his strategies for measuring the CP violation parameter with the Run II data. Robyn Madrak and Carter Hall are starting analyses in diboson production which could provide a result for their theses. There are new students who are working actively on CDF hardware and/or analysis, including Ayana Holloway, Melissa Wessels and David Medvigy. Tommaso Dorigo joined our group as a post-doc at the beginning of the year. He plays the central role in the CMX and is active in several analyses areas. Last year he completed his Ph.D. with the University of Padova. A summary of present personnel is given in Table 1.
