saw four or five people <strong>and</strong> they just attacked me, all carry<strong>in</strong>g cutlasses,” he said.<br />

“They really beat me, all of the women were shout<strong>in</strong>g. There was all blood<br />

everywhere <strong>and</strong> I had to take my car <strong>and</strong> go to the hospital.” 187 He said that two<br />

people had died <strong>in</strong> the fight<strong>in</strong>g at his motor park that day, <strong>and</strong> that he had not<br />

reported the <strong>in</strong>cident to the police lest the pro-Tokyo union leadership bar him from<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g out of the motor parks altogether. 188 The police reportedly did not <strong>in</strong>tervene<br />

or hold to account any of those responsible for that violence. 189<br />

With Tokyo back <strong>in</strong> control of NURTW, Tawa <strong>and</strong> his supporters were exiled from most<br />

of the motor parks <strong>in</strong> Oyo. Some of them, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Tawa, took up residence <strong>in</strong>side<br />

the compound that <strong>in</strong>cludes the governor’s lodge for mutual protection. Governor<br />

Ladoja acknowledged this <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>terview with Human Rights Watch. 190<br />

By this po<strong>in</strong>t, Ladoja <strong>and</strong> Adedibu were jockey<strong>in</strong>g for position ahead of the 2007<br />

elections. Ladoja sought to rega<strong>in</strong> the PDP nom<strong>in</strong>ation for governor to run for a<br />

second term while Adedibu, along with President Obasanjo <strong>in</strong> Abuja, supported<br />

Deputy Governor Christopher Alao-Akala <strong>in</strong> his bid to obta<strong>in</strong> the party’s ticket. The<br />

result was a series of bloody clashes between supporters of Adedibu <strong>and</strong> Ladoja.<br />

The Tokyo <strong>and</strong> Tawa factions of NURTW were aga<strong>in</strong> at the front l<strong>in</strong>es of these clashes.<br />

Pre-Election Escalation<br />

In the months lead<strong>in</strong>g up to the 2007 elections, Ladoja <strong>and</strong> Adedibu’s factions<br />

fought each other regularly. On the weekend of February 4, 2007, the two factions at<br />

a PDP rally <strong>in</strong> neighbor<strong>in</strong>g Osun state when the party hierarchy formally awarded the<br />

ticket to Akala. At least four people were killed. 191 Adedibu <strong>and</strong> Ladoja both blamed<br />

one another for <strong>in</strong>stigat<strong>in</strong>g the clash.<br />
