C) Qualitative Results: Interviews and Focus Groups<br />

Only issues important in relati<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> quantitative comp<strong>on</strong>ent will be highlighted in this<br />

secti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The first set <strong>of</strong> questi<strong>on</strong>s aimed at looking at housing and displacement c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

family. Results indicated that <strong>the</strong> majority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> IDPs interviewed are living in sheet metal<br />

housing, wood houses and tents where <strong>the</strong>y share <strong>the</strong>ir tents with o<strong>the</strong>r family members. Many <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> IDPs interviewed expressed that <strong>the</strong>y face <strong>the</strong> threat <strong>of</strong> evicti<strong>on</strong> and restricti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

movements. Families also expressed that <strong>the</strong>re is a lack <strong>of</strong> safe spaces for children to play. IDP’s<br />

described <strong>the</strong>ir displacement and <strong>the</strong>ir social circumstances as follows: “I feel l<strong>on</strong>ely, I am living<br />

in an area <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> camp where I do not know any<strong>on</strong>e… my family got resettled in ano<strong>the</strong>r camp”.<br />

Many stated that <strong>the</strong>y deal with <strong>the</strong>se effects al<strong>on</strong>e because <strong>the</strong>y “we were relocated to this camp<br />

and I do not have any<strong>on</strong>e to talk with.” Some participants in <strong>the</strong> group discussi<strong>on</strong>s described <strong>the</strong><br />

following “I do not want to visit any<strong>on</strong>e and share my difficulties and fears, people around were<br />

displaced as well and are even more stressed <strong>the</strong>n me and have enough things to worry about…”<br />

“I am staying al<strong>on</strong>e in my tent as I d<strong>on</strong>’t know and do not trust <strong>the</strong> people in <strong>the</strong> camp” .<br />

Security problems are comm<strong>on</strong> in <strong>the</strong> camps. Some participants in <strong>the</strong> group discussi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

expressed <strong>the</strong>ir sense <strong>of</strong> insecurity as follows: “<strong>the</strong> security here is more and more a problem,<br />

<strong>the</strong> pris<strong>on</strong>ers escaped <strong>the</strong> pris<strong>on</strong>s, <strong>the</strong>y are here somewhere, maybe even in our camp…”, “every<br />

day we hear stories <strong>of</strong> people we know who were raped, If I know that my security and <strong>the</strong><br />

security for my children is insured I will not stress… I can not sleep because I am scarred <strong>of</strong><br />

being raped…”, “my children are supposed to go to school, I do not dare to send <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong><br />

streets are insecure, and what if ano<strong>the</strong>r earthquake takes place…”“Rape is a part <strong>of</strong> daily life<br />

for many in <strong>the</strong> camps because everyday we hear stories <strong>of</strong> people we know who were raped.”<br />

While <strong>the</strong>y do not like <strong>the</strong>ir current residency and living in tents, <strong>the</strong>y are also afraid <strong>of</strong> being<br />

kicked-out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir current residencies before <strong>the</strong>y are able to find suitable housing. Many fear<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y will be sent to new tent camps that are fur<strong>the</strong>r away from any services and schooling for<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir children. They stated that <strong>the</strong>y do not have <strong>the</strong> income to pay <strong>the</strong> transportati<strong>on</strong> costs for<br />

travel to and from basic services.<br />

The sec<strong>on</strong>d sets <strong>of</strong> questi<strong>on</strong>s looked at how ec<strong>on</strong>omic, family, social and recreati<strong>on</strong>al life has<br />

changed after <strong>the</strong> disaster. As for <strong>the</strong> family life, <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> house was mostly <strong>the</strong> husband,<br />

wife or ano<strong>the</strong>r family member or a friend. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> females from female-headed households<br />

expressed <strong>the</strong> sudden increase in <strong>the</strong> resp<strong>on</strong>sibilities <strong>the</strong>y have to carry. They feel that after <strong>the</strong><br />

loss or injury <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir husbands due to <strong>the</strong> earthquake, <strong>the</strong>y now have to assume <strong>the</strong> role as both<br />

“mo<strong>the</strong>r and fa<strong>the</strong>r” for <strong>the</strong>ir children. While some households experienced <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

primary income producer, o<strong>the</strong>r households had to deal with <strong>the</strong> fallout <strong>of</strong> an injured head <strong>of</strong><br />

household. Many men feel emasculated because although <strong>the</strong>y are physically present in <strong>the</strong><br />

household, <strong>the</strong>y are unable to work due to <strong>the</strong>ir disabilities (most comm<strong>on</strong>ly an amputati<strong>on</strong>).<br />

They are left feeling that <strong>the</strong>y are “less than human”. The weight <strong>of</strong> resp<strong>on</strong>sibility <strong>of</strong>ten now<br />

rests with <strong>the</strong> women. The relati<strong>on</strong>ship <strong>of</strong> parents with children was also affected as many<br />

families expressed that <strong>the</strong>y cannot c<strong>on</strong>trol <strong>the</strong>ir children anymore, due to logistical<br />

c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong>s and <strong>the</strong> fact that children are becoming “too free” but also that parents “became<br />
