HE sector. These components <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>in</strong>tr<strong>in</strong>sic behaviour and choices as well as a drive to be holistic.<br />

Because of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terrelatedness of <strong>the</strong> components of identity formation, each component such as <strong>the</strong><br />

promise made by <strong>the</strong> HEI to <strong>the</strong> student, parent and community, can have far-reach<strong>in</strong>g strategic<br />

consequences. The choice of HEI – often <strong>in</strong>formed by brand<strong>in</strong>g material – will significantly <strong>in</strong>fluence<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual‟s self-actualisation and self-esteem.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Maslow (Newell, 1995), realis<strong>in</strong>g one‟s full potential is only possible when one has<br />

obta<strong>in</strong>ed self-actualisation. The latter depends on an au<strong>the</strong>ntic self-esteem that <strong>in</strong>cludes self-worth,<br />

self-regard, self-respect and self-<strong>in</strong>tegrity as well as <strong>the</strong> ability to develop and survive adversaries<br />

(Newell, 1995). Value-add<strong>in</strong>g properties of self-esteem <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> confidence to carry oneself <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

public doma<strong>in</strong> and to own one‟s uniqueness. The synergy of an <strong>in</strong>dividual‟s choices, actions, thoughts<br />

and feel<strong>in</strong>gs forms and is formed by self-esteem (Branden, 1997). This <strong>in</strong>tertw<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>ternal/external<br />

cycle echoes <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>sider/outsider perspective of identity development and <strong>the</strong> role of brand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> HEI.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Branden (2001), a positive stimulus, <strong>in</strong>centive or recognition can have a positive, but<br />

temporal, comfort<strong>in</strong>g effect on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual. Like a human be<strong>in</strong>g, an <strong>in</strong>stitution also goes through<br />

developmental stages and processes throughout its existence, form<strong>in</strong>g a unique and au<strong>the</strong>ntic<br />

identity.<br />

Au<strong>the</strong>ntic identity is characterised by value-based liv<strong>in</strong>g, as is evident <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual‟s commitment<br />

to, and passion about <strong>the</strong> identified purpose and values, like-m<strong>in</strong>ded relationships, transparent<br />

associations, and self-discipl<strong>in</strong>e to realise one‟s drive for personal growth and development (George,<br />

2009). In addition, <strong>in</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>stream counsell<strong>in</strong>g psychology, au<strong>the</strong>nticity is viewed as <strong>the</strong> most vital<br />

aspect of well-be<strong>in</strong>g (Wood, L<strong>in</strong>ley, Maltby, Baliousis, & Joseph, 2008).<br />

Aristotle dist<strong>in</strong>guished between true self-love and vulgar self-love and, s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>n, true self-love is<br />

often considered to be <strong>the</strong> primary basis for realis<strong>in</strong>g and add<strong>in</strong>g value to one‟s potential, as well as<br />

au<strong>the</strong>ntic identity development. By contrast, vulgar self-love is perceived as <strong>the</strong> cause of selfcentredness<br />

(Greenberg, 2008).<br />

In this study, au<strong>the</strong>nticity is juxtaposed by <strong>the</strong> character of <strong>the</strong> detached, cynical and manipulative<br />

Red Queen <strong>in</strong> <strong>Alice</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Wonderland</strong>. She is efficient, ruthless, driven by ambition and self-love, will<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to trample over o<strong>the</strong>rs, and destroys diversity and au<strong>the</strong>nticity as she commands “Off with his head!”<br />

This attitude and attribute of <strong>in</strong>dividuals is often found at <strong>in</strong>stitutional level, as formulated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g quotation:<br />
