Significant progress has been achieved in reducing Accident Frequency Rates<br />
(AFR) across the Group and joint ventures (JVs), despite continuing<br />
increases in employee numbers since 2002.<br />

Overall safety performance has improved:<br />
by 16% since 2006; and<br />
by 65% since 2002.<br />
The AFR for wholly owned businesses improved by 12% in <strong>2007</strong> compared to<br />
2006, (from 0.30 in 2006 to 0.28). This performance is well ahead of the<br />
HSE’s UK Revitalising Health and Safety targets of 5% year on year.<br />

overall AFR is down 65%, employee numbers up 118%;<br />
UK operating companies AFR down 44%, employee numbers up 87%; and<br />
US operating companies AFR down 77%, employee numbers up 104%.<br />
The combined AFR for operating companies plus significant JVs has improved<br />
by 16% from 0.25 in 2006 to 0.21 in <strong>2007</strong> and a 65% improvement overall<br />
from 2002.<br />

Operating company AFR improvements<br />
at the end of December, 12 (14 in 2006) out of 28 businesses reported<br />
accident frequency rates within their <strong>2007</strong> targets. Eight (six in 2006) further<br />
businesses reported better than 2006 performance without achieving their<br />
<strong>2007</strong> target.<br />
Safety management audit<br />
all businesses, with the exception of the US and new acquisitions, are now<br />
certified to the internationally recognised safety management standard<br />
OHSAS 18001. The US operating companies have developed a working<br />
party in order to work towards external assurance; and<br />
our JV businesses in Hong Kong and Dubai also maintained certification to<br />
OHSAS 18001.<br />
Fatalities<br />
four fatalities occurred in our wholly owned operating companies; two in the<br />
US, one in Italy and one in Malaysia; and<br />
14 further fatalities occurred in our JV businesses; 10 in Dubai and four in<br />
Hong Kong.<br />
