THE AMERICAN MISSIONARIES.<br />

AFTER leaving Doctor Grey's house on that<br />

afternoon in July, Honda Jiro spent the rest<br />

of the day in walking about Yokohama. He noticed<br />

with interest the streets lined with smart new houses,<br />

and filled with wheeled vehicles and carriages drawn<br />

by horses. He looked in the native shops glittering<br />

with fresh wares, and watched the foreign men at<br />

the bank, hongs, business offices, and shops. Later<br />

in the day, when they went out for a walk, horseback<br />

ride, or carriage drive before dining, he saw them at<br />

their play hour. The hairiness of their faces, the<br />

ugliness of many of them, and their curious dress<br />

and manners impressed him at first with intense<br />

dislike.<br />

When, however, he reflected on the substantial<br />

nature of their ships, stores, houses, and public buildings<br />

as he ; occasionally saw a golden-haired child, or<br />

beautiful young girl noticed the freedom of ; all, as<br />

shown in riding on horseback and in vehicles ;<br />

and as<br />

he considered the mighty change that had passed<br />

over Yokohama, order came out of the chaos of his<br />

feeling and calm from the storm of his impressions.<br />

He went back to his inn with a determination<br />

stronger than ever to know the secrets of<br />
