Pressure <strong>in</strong>creases on Obama over Syria<br />

WASHINGTON – U S<br />

President Barack Obama<br />

issued a new warn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong><br />

Syria on April 26 th<strong>at</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

chemical weapons would be<br />

a “game changer” as he faced<br />

ris<strong>in</strong>g pressure <strong>at</strong> home and<br />

abroad <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>tervene <strong>in</strong> the<br />

civil war.<br />

But a day after US<br />

officials said they suspected<br />

th<strong>at</strong> the deadly agent sar<strong>in</strong><br />

had already been used <strong>in</strong><br />

small-scale <strong>at</strong>tacks, Obama<br />

warned Wash<strong>in</strong>g<strong>to</strong>n must<br />

act prudently and establish<br />

exactly if, how and when<br />

such arms were used.<br />

Obama, who had<br />

previously <strong>to</strong>ld Syrian<br />

President Bashar al-Assad<br />

the use of chemical weapons<br />

would cross a “red l<strong>in</strong>e,”<br />

promised a “vigorous” US<br />

and <strong>in</strong>tern<strong>at</strong>ional probe <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong><br />

the l<strong>at</strong>est reports.<br />

But he appeared wary of<br />

launch<strong>in</strong>g military action<br />

based on <strong>in</strong>itial <strong>in</strong>telligence<br />

reports of chemical weapons<br />

use, even as other official<br />

comments and media<br />

suggested th<strong>at</strong> is exactly<br />

wh<strong>at</strong> had happened.<br />

Obama did reiter<strong>at</strong>e th<strong>at</strong><br />

the use of chemical weapons<br />

would be “a game changer,”<br />

as he met Jordan’s K<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Abdullah II <strong>in</strong> the Oval<br />

Office.<br />

“I th<strong>in</strong>k all of us, not<br />

just <strong>in</strong> the United St<strong>at</strong>es<br />

but around the world,<br />

recognise how we cannot<br />

stand by and permit the<br />

system<strong>at</strong>ic use of weapons<br />

like chemical weapons on<br />

civilian popul<strong>at</strong>ions,” he<br />

said.<br />

But the US leader, who<br />

has been reluctant <strong>to</strong> plunge<br />

the US military <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> action<br />

<strong>in</strong> Syria after extric<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

it from Iraq, warned: “We<br />

have <strong>to</strong> act prudently. We<br />

have <strong>to</strong> make assessments<br />

deliber<strong>at</strong>ely.”<br />

Add<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> the political<br />

pressure on Obama, the<br />

Syrian opposition urged the<br />

UN Security Council <strong>to</strong> take<br />

immedi<strong>at</strong>e <strong>step</strong>s, possibly<br />

even by impos<strong>in</strong>g a no-fly<br />

zone.<br />

And British Prime<br />

M<strong>in</strong>ister David Cameron<br />

said the grow<strong>in</strong>g evidence<br />

th<strong>at</strong> Assad had turned<br />

chemical agents on his<br />

own people was “extremely<br />

serious.”<br />

The fight<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Syria,<br />

which the UN says has left<br />

more than 70,000 dead s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

March 2011, showed no<br />

signs of ab<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g on April 26,<br />

with fresh <strong>clashes</strong> outside<br />

the capital, Damascus, and<br />

elsewhere throughout the<br />

country. – AFP
