‘Flo<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g Bliss’ aims for S<strong>in</strong>gapore filmfest<br />
By Lw<strong>in</strong> Mar Htun<br />
THE short film Flo<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g Bliss,<br />
which explores rel<strong>at</strong>ions<br />
among a group of young<br />
Yangon artists of different<br />
religious backgrounds,<br />
will be submitted <strong>to</strong> the<br />
S<strong>in</strong>gapore-<strong>Myanmar</strong> Film<br />
Festival, scheduled <strong>to</strong> be<br />
held <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore <strong>in</strong> July.<br />
The film’s direc<strong>to</strong>r, Mg<br />
Mg Tha My<strong>in</strong>t, said he was<br />
<strong>in</strong>spired <strong>to</strong> make the film<br />
by the recent conflicts<br />
between Buddhists and<br />
Muslims <strong>in</strong> <strong>Myanmar</strong>.<br />
“At the time of these<br />
conflicts, a group of young<br />
artists of different religions<br />
and ethnicities would meet<br />
<strong>at</strong> the river <strong>at</strong> the bot<strong>to</strong>m of<br />
L<strong>at</strong>ha Road <strong>at</strong> a place they<br />
called the Flo<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g Bar,” the<br />
direc<strong>to</strong>r said.<br />
“When I saw them I<br />
realised th<strong>at</strong> even though<br />
they were of different<br />
religions, they could still<br />
have fun <strong>to</strong>gether. I want<br />
my film <strong>to</strong> give the message<br />
th<strong>at</strong> no m<strong>at</strong>ter who you are,<br />
where you’re from, or wh<strong>at</strong><br />
your religion might be, the<br />
ma<strong>in</strong> th<strong>in</strong>g is wh<strong>at</strong> is <strong>in</strong> your<br />
m<strong>in</strong>d.”<br />
Flo<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g Bliss is the<br />
second film by Mg Mg Tha<br />
My<strong>in</strong>t. His first, Scrap, was<br />
shown <strong>at</strong> the 2012 W<strong>at</strong>hann<br />
Film Festival <strong>in</strong> Yangon.<br />
He said the festival, which<br />

is be<strong>in</strong>g held for the first<br />
time this year, is organised<br />
by a <strong>Myanmar</strong> filmmaker<br />
liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gapore.<br />
“It’s a good opportunity<br />
for me <strong>to</strong> get more<br />
experience as a filmmaker<br />
and <strong>to</strong> compete <strong>in</strong> film<br />
festival,” he said.<br />
Mg Mg Tha My<strong>in</strong>t said<br />
th<strong>at</strong> even though the film<br />
is a drama, all the cast<br />
members are real artists<br />
who went <strong>to</strong> the river <strong>to</strong><br />
hang out twice a week.<br />
“I didn’t impose any fake<br />
style on them. All the scenes<br />
from the film are based on<br />
reality, but there is some<br />
act<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>e cont<strong>in</strong>uity<br />
from scene <strong>to</strong> scene. But the<br />
scenes where they’re hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />
fun <strong>at</strong> the w<strong>at</strong>erfront are<br />
real,” he said.<br />
The ma<strong>in</strong> cast members<br />
are street artist Arkar Kyaw,<br />
pho<strong>to</strong>grapher Saw W<strong>in</strong> Htut,<br />
musician Sam and author<br />
Soe Wai Htun.<br />
Soe Wai Htun, who is also<br />
general manager of ART<br />
Enterta<strong>in</strong>ment, said he is<br />
also collabor<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g with Mg<br />
Mg Tha My<strong>in</strong>t on a film for<br />
the Human Rights Festival<br />
<strong>to</strong> be held <strong>in</strong> Yangon <strong>in</strong> June.<br />
“This is the first time<br />
I’ve performed as an ac<strong>to</strong>r,<br />
but it wasn’t difficult<br />
because all the scenes<br />
reflect my daily lifestyle,”<br />
he said. “I’m very happy<br />
‘ I want my film <strong>to</strong> give the message th<strong>at</strong> no m<strong>at</strong>ter who you are, where you’re<br />
from, or wh<strong>at</strong> your religion might be, the ma<strong>in</strong> th<strong>in</strong>g is wh<strong>at</strong> is <strong>in</strong> your m<strong>in</strong>d.’<br />
and s<strong>at</strong>isfied because my<br />
first film will hopefully<br />
compete <strong>in</strong> a festival <strong>in</strong><br />
S<strong>in</strong>gapore.”<br />
He said Flo<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g Bliss also<br />
conta<strong>in</strong>ed a message about<br />
keep<strong>in</strong>g one’s priorities<br />
straight <strong>in</strong> life.<br />
“Many young people <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>Myanmar</strong> are serious about<br />
cre<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g music, which is a<br />
good th<strong>in</strong>g. But some are<br />
so serious th<strong>at</strong> they forget<br />
about important th<strong>in</strong>gs like<br />
educ<strong>at</strong>ion. I don’t want this<br />
<strong>to</strong> happen, so this message<br />
can also be found <strong>in</strong> the<br />
film,” he said.<br />
Arkar Kyaw <strong>to</strong>ld The<br />
<strong>Myanmar</strong> Times th<strong>at</strong> the<br />
film shows young people<br />
not only hav<strong>in</strong>g fun but also<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g, which is important<br />
because “most young<br />
people <strong>in</strong> <strong>Myanmar</strong> don’t<br />
have dreams or direction”.<br />
Mg Mg Tha My<strong>in</strong>t said one<br />
problem with shoot<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
film was the crowds <strong>at</strong> the<br />
w<strong>at</strong>erfront, so they had <strong>to</strong><br />
wait until midnight <strong>to</strong> shoot<br />
some of the scenes.<br />
“After 11pm the crowds<br />
disappeared and we could<br />
start shoot<strong>in</strong>g. But it was<br />
also dangerous for us<br />
because there were some<br />
drunk people around, but<br />
we also had a lot of people<br />
<strong>in</strong> our own group,” he said.<br />
Flo<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g Bliss was<br />
produced by Nut and Butter<br />
film production and ART<br />
Enterta<strong>in</strong>ment. Follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the S<strong>in</strong>gapore-<strong>Myanmar</strong> Film<br />
Festival, the film will be<br />
uploaded on<strong>to</strong> the Youtube<br />
web<strong>site</strong> so it can be seen by<br />
people around the world.
