5-gallon buckets with lids- as many as necessary <strong>to</strong> collect food scraps<br />

o These will collect food scraps dur<strong>in</strong>g meal times. The amount you need<br />

will be determ<strong>in</strong>ed by the number of students, their eat<strong>in</strong>g habits, and<br />

frequency of your pick up. If you aren’t sure, start with 5.<br />

o After lunch, the buckets will be placed outside <strong>in</strong> a designated location<br />

with the lid on. This will prevent odor and pests for a day or two.<br />

o If you are part of the Northeast K<strong>in</strong>gdom Waste Management District,<br />

they will provide these buckets at no cost.<br />

o Instead of pay<strong>in</strong>g for the buckets, f<strong>in</strong>d a parent or community member<br />

that uses 5-gallon buckets and ask them <strong>to</strong> donate them.<br />

1 Cart for hous<strong>in</strong>g buckets<br />

o A roll<strong>in</strong>g cart <strong>to</strong> house the buckets can help when transport<strong>in</strong>g them from<br />

the cafeteria <strong>to</strong> outside.<br />

Cloth rags<br />

o Have a supply of rags on hand that are <strong>to</strong> clean up food scraps from<br />

buckets and floors.<br />

Scale that measures <strong>in</strong> one pound <strong>in</strong>crements<br />

o Record<strong>in</strong>g the weight of food scraps composted everyday can serve<br />

several purposes. By keep<strong>in</strong>g records, you can show how much food is<br />

not be<strong>in</strong>g eaten, how much food is be<strong>in</strong>g diverted from the landfill, and<br />

how much waste is produced by the cafeteria over time. Students can get<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved and use the weights <strong>to</strong> construct math problems or track the<br />

compost<strong>in</strong>g operation.<br />

o The best type of scale <strong>to</strong> use is one where the weight can be viewed from<br />

the side or has a memory lock feature s<strong>in</strong>ce the b<strong>in</strong> will likely cover the<br />

<strong>to</strong>p of the scale.<br />

o You can f<strong>in</strong>d a memory lock scale, or <strong>in</strong>dustrial scale, by search<strong>in</strong>g onl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

or by visit<strong>in</strong>g www.quill.com.<br />
