Second Year and Beyond Time L<strong>in</strong>e<br />

Tra<strong>in</strong> the next class of Compost Keepers. Hold an <strong>in</strong>-class workshop that will<br />

teach them about moni<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g and car<strong>in</strong>g for the compost throughout the year.<br />

On the first day of compost<strong>in</strong>g, have an All-<strong>School</strong> Refresher Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Make an<br />

announcement dur<strong>in</strong>g lunch <strong>to</strong> rem<strong>in</strong>d students how <strong>to</strong> use the compost b<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

Have the Compost Keepers stand by the trashcans and compost buckets <strong>to</strong><br />

rem<strong>in</strong>d students where food and trash goes. For the next few days, closely<br />

watch the students sort<strong>in</strong>g and tra<strong>in</strong> when necessary.<br />

Send a note home <strong>to</strong> parents describ<strong>in</strong>g the compost<strong>in</strong>g that is go<strong>in</strong>g on at<br />

school and the role their children have <strong>in</strong> it. This is a great way <strong>to</strong> build<br />

enthusiasm and create a connection <strong>to</strong> home.<br />

Thank You Cards: Be sure <strong>to</strong> properly thank everyone that helped started, cared<br />

for, or provided materials for the compost.<br />

<strong>Program</strong> Report: Evaluate the effectiveness of your compost<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>frastructure.<br />

Keep track and share the volume of compost collected, the students who helped<br />

and community members <strong>in</strong>volved. Use your program report <strong>to</strong> challenge your<br />

school <strong>to</strong> make a bigger impact next year.<br />

Adjust your trash pickup schedule accord<strong>in</strong>gly <strong>to</strong> reflect the diversion of food<br />

scraps and recycl<strong>in</strong>g, moni<strong>to</strong>r cost change<br />

For the Compost Pile:<br />

Secure material resources (hay, manure, etc.)<br />

Ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> compost structure<br />

Check <strong>in</strong> on compost regularly<br />

Turn over piles<br />

Cure older piles (s<strong>to</strong>p add<strong>in</strong>g food scraps) <strong>to</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ish process<br />
