Us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> hypo<strong>the</strong>tical locati<strong>on</strong> associati<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong> hear<strong>in</strong>g system is able to retrieve<br />
those comp<strong>on</strong>ents from <strong>the</strong> <strong>superimposed</strong> sound fields AL + BL and BR + AR that<br />
each stem from <strong>on</strong>e loudspeaker. Due to <strong>the</strong>ir suitable temporal and spectral<br />
characteristics, <strong>the</strong> comp<strong>on</strong>ents AL / AR and BL / BR each cause a locati<strong>on</strong><br />
associati<strong>on</strong>. This is c<strong>on</strong>trasted by <strong>the</strong> summ<strong>in</strong>g localisati<strong>on</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple shown <strong>in</strong> Figure<br />
18 b, <strong>the</strong> difference to <strong>the</strong> associati<strong>on</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple be<strong>in</strong>g clearly visible. The summed<br />
signals AL + BL and BR + AR are evaluated; <strong>the</strong>y c<strong>on</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> spectral changes due to<br />
<strong>the</strong> present comb filter (see Secti<strong>on</strong> 2.2.1).<br />
It appears that <strong>the</strong> associati<strong>on</strong> model offers a plausible explanati<strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>effectiveness of <strong>the</strong> comb filter effect <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> phantom source situati<strong>on</strong> – presumably,<br />
this is <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>ly possible explanati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> next chapter, <strong>the</strong> associati<strong>on</strong> model shall be discussed <strong>in</strong> terms of specific<br />
auditory phenomena occurr<strong>in</strong>g for particular c<strong>on</strong>stellati<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> <strong>superimposed</strong> sound<br />
field.
